in auto shop we got a cooling system flush machine and the guy that demoed it says for years everyone said we are supposed to use distilled water but he said now manufactures say we are to use tap. i guess some thing in the water is helpful. my teacher was very doubtful so he called his master teacher at bob baker Chevrolet and thats what they said we are to use.

I will always use distilled water. Tap water contains other elements that cause rusting.

Distilled water can be bought at grocery stores and drug stores. I strongly recommend using it when mixing with coolant.

Better yet, just buy the coolant that pre-mixed. Saves alot of time and aggravation.

yea, I'm going to do a flush too, so I am just going to buy the distilled water seperately.

acidic? Do you know what distilled water is?

It's PURE water, nothing but water, all other chemicals, minerals, ions, are all removed. It has a pH of 7 (neutral).

Our local Wal-mart sells distilled water by the gallon, about $0.55 each.

Re: Where do you guys get your distilled water?

The theoretical pH of distilled water is 7.0. In practice, however, most distilled water will have a pH that is slightly acidic (less than 7.0) due to the presence of dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) that is absorbed from the atmosphere and which forms carbonic acid (H2CO3) in water. During distillation, the dissolved CO2 will be driven out of the liquid. However, during condensation the water will re-absorb the CO2 again resulting in a pH that is less than 7.0.

unless its a really bad process, the pH will be extremely close to 7.0, hardly acidic, I've studied this stuff.

When looking at the alkalinity of tap water, it is much more considerable than the "acidity" of distilled water.

I'm not looking to argue here, just make a clearification of something that was brought up.

I am going to use distilled water.

yep, i get it for mere pennies at walmart and save some coin vs the premixed stuff.
