hey guys, here soon i am going to be cleaning out my coolant system. don't need to know how to do it, but would just like to know what kind of coolant is recommended to put back in it. it has the dexron, or whatever, crap in it right now. just wanting to know what kind of coolant to put back in it, or if i should stick with the dexron crap. i have heard it's good, and bad... more bad than good, so little help? haha... thanks, appreciate the help.

        Re: coolant

This is one of those posts that in the past has generated numerous and sometimes heated responses.

        So I'll kick it off.

Heard lots of bad things about Dex-cool. Heard lots of good things about Dex-cool. My personal experience is this:

99 FB with 115,000 miles - all on Dex-cool. The last cooling system flush (which I believe is the first one it got) was at 80,000 miles. All the components in the cooling system are original as delivered with the car when new (except that stupid little plastic elbow for thermo bypass!!) no failures and no problems.

98 Saturn SC1 - 55,000 miles - all on Dex-cool. Hasn't been flushed yet. No failures and no problems with the cooling system.

Also, these cars operate in an extreme temperature range enviroment. +40 degrees C in summer, -40 degrees C in winter.

So far, Dex-cool is working just fine for me. Just don't mix it with other (green) coolants or additives unless the additives specifically state Dex-cool compatable.

        Let the games begin........
Now Playing: \'99 Pewter Firebird, stock, bone stock, and nothing but stock, so help me God!
Comming attractions: K&N Filter, Lid Mod, Intake Bellows Smooth Pipe Mod.
I dream about: Forced Induction (TC or SC) or NOX (or both!)

The Dex Cool in my car is 5 years old, and looks as fresh as it was on Day 1

            Re: coolant

aight, then i'll prolly stick with that dexcool stuff. my friend keeps trying to tell me to get rid of it, that it's more harmful than anything. im just like, dude you only say that because a mechanic who is taking a year on fixing my mom's car told you that... don't get me wrong, my friend sometimes knows what hes saying, but if his info comes from that guy... screw it, i want somebody else's opinion.
