  • plug and wire myth???

so ive heard from a lot of my v8 buddies saying that if i got new/upgraded plugs and wires that id get more horsepower.

BUT i went up 2 advance to go and get upgraded wires and plugs but someone up there told me that the ac delco spark plugs that i need for my car wont giv any increase in horsepower and that this is a myth...

is this true? is there no hp gain in acdelco spark plugs and wires, and if there isnt what type of plugs and wires can i get to get a hp increase if this so called myth is true?

    Re: plug and wire myth???

getting higher performance plugs and wires won't pull any power out of a factory engine, and if so it won't be anything noticable. it isn't worth it on a factory motor. now if you do some bigger upgraders on your motor, more than just CAI and exhuast, then having high performance plugs and wires will do a lot better job. upgrading on a modded engine will be more worth while, but on a factory just get what the manufacture recomends.

if your old stuff has been in there a while, you will restore lost performance. If your old stuff is in good shape, you probably wont notice a difference. lower resistance wires and good plugs may free up a few hp, but thats it.

Higher grade wires have a stronger signal with less delay. Gains are possible, but not noticeable.

i replaced my stock coils/wires a year ago with some msd coils and wires and all i really noticed was a smoother idle and smoother pull through the rpm band and it revved a little quicker. I dunno how much the msd had to do with that as much as just replacing the old worn parts. i got a good deal on the msd wires/coils so i ran with it, if i did it again, i would just get direct stock replacements from auto zone

Like it was said before, you most likely will notice a smoother idle and better mileage on a engine with worn parts. I replaced my stock plugs, wires, and coils last fall at around 55000 on my 96RS. I replaced them with ac delco iridiums, msd 8.5 super conducters and msd coils. I noticed no real difference, but I didn't replace worn parts either. The msd super conductor wires have 40-50 ohms resistence per foot. I'm not sure what the stock wires have, but its over 500 ohms maybe between 1000-1500 ohms resistence. So using high performance wires will get more spark energy to the plugs. On a stock engine, you might get a more complete burn so maybe your fuel economy will go up. However, using high performance wires and coils will allow you to change the spark plug gap since you are sending more energy to the plug. On highly modified engines, this will be more important. As you increase compression or increase cylinder pressure (ie turbos, sc, nos), it gets harder to ignite the mixture. If you change your plug gap it will be easier to light the fuel, but you need more energy to run the differenct plug gaps hence the need for running better wires and coils that deliver more energy to the plug.

If MSDs are 8.5 vs the stock 7mm, are they more resistant to heat from the exhaust, hence more durable?

                  Anyone tried these?

ya that is very very true. when i got my car it had 57,000 on it when i pulled the plugs it looked like they had never been changed they were very very bad and i saw a differnce in the gas milage but not to much in power. if your plugs and wires a old then you night feel somthing but remember that you are just geting it back to stock if there are no mods.

damn, only $21 shipped, get them. Mine(Borg Warner) were $36 from pepboys. It doesn't matter what brand you get. BTW, get some heat sheating. I am using this heat sheating http://cableorganizer.com/insultherm-spark/. So far, so good. It's been like 5k miles. 9.0, 8.5, 7.0 mm they all will go bad since we got so much heat from the manifold .

I found another seller who has some listed as AC Delco, cost me ~$55 shipped for all 3. To me, they do look like new AC Delco coils with the cylinder #'s scratched off. I am pretty happy with them and posted about it in this thread:

I'm running NGK Iridium plugs and Bosch Premium wires, I've noticed no gain in HP, but she runs sooooo much better. I never would have bought the stuff if Auto Zone wasnt lettin them go for dirt cheap(for once!)
