  • Noise... Any Ideas?

OK, so I have been hearing some light valve chatter and such coming from the car. I decided to seafoam my 13x,xxx mile car today and well not much smoke came out. I wasn't surprised because I take great care of my car. However, after the seafoam I noticed the chatter and such is gone. :)

But whenever I get to exactly 3k rpms I hear a hissing noise. Yes, a hissing noise like something you would hear from a pop can that has been shaken and poked with a needle (sorry for the bad wording)

I tried to check the exhaust but no room to tighten the headers and y-pipe with no way of getting under the car while I'm at the apartment. I checked all the fluids and they are full... does this sound like an exhaust leak to you. If so, then how come I don't hear it when I just rev the car to 3 grand. I only hear it when driving. I have no other idea what it could be.

Check your vacum lines and gaskets to make sure there's no leaks. You won't hear it at lower because there isn't as much pressure, that would be my guess.
Let's flip a coin. Heads I get tail, Tails I get head.

I think it may be where the y-pipe meets the headers but I can't get anything up to it. If that was it, wouldn't it hiss just when reving as well. I mean driving and reving still puts air through the exhaust?!?!?!?!?!

I put one can in the gas, 1/2 in the oil and 1/2 down the brake booster line while car is running.

The 1/2 can to the oil is measured out for how many quarts our 6's hold. You will not need to pour that much into the crankcase on your mom's 4 cylinder. And I don't see how a tick is going to make it sound like a diesel engine. Maybe a bad exhaust leak would do that, is there black residue on the back bumper where the exhaust exits? And what does the tick sound like, a lifter? You may need to put some type of oil treatment in there at next oil change, and seafoaming it will help it as well.

yes i know not to use as much... and believe me, ive tried so many kinds of oil treatment additives. one time it worked for a day, but then came back, so i bought the same stuff and it didnt work that time, so i keep trying new items. sea foam is last resort, and its not a exhaust leak, ive been under the car, its clean, and the back bumper area is clean as well. and by diesel i over-exagerate, its not deep like a diesel engine, just loud as hell, like VERY loud. how many cans of sea-foam should i use... maybe 1/3 to oil, 1/3 to vacuum line and a 1/3 to gas? what you think?

my astro van hisses pretty loud, but i think it may be the intake cuzz it's louder when u put ur ear closer to the airbox. i've driven it since last summer and have never noticed it til a couple weeks ago. think it may have been there all along and u jus never noticed it til u listened for it?

btw i know an astro van is COMPLETELY unrelated to this forum, but i know some intakes can hiss when there's a slight crack somewhere, or theyre just loud anyway. also heard tell of a loose bolt on the transmission pan causing a hiss, but i've never seen this confirmed.

interesting that you say that because I've noticed that I have a transmission fluid leak... which could lead to the hissing while driving and not in neutral
