On a 3.4 there is one sensor in each exhaust manifold. On a 3.8, there is one in each manifold and one after the cat.

For the 96 3.8, you have 4 o2 sensors. One on each manifold, one before and one after the converter. Friggin GM!

I had 3. One on each manifold, one after the cat.

          For reference:

All 3.4s and pre- ODBII LT1s had two O2s, one post each manifold. Post ODBII LT1s and 96-97 3800s have four O2s - one post each manifold and one pre/post cat.

LS1s and post 98 3800s have three O2s - one past each manifold and one post cat.
