  • help me with my mpg issue!

    Ok well i have a 1994 firebird 3.4 auto. 129,000

My car suffers the most i nthe city and i could probably get about 10mpg if i drove it the way i want but if i drive it slow i still could only get about 16-17 max!!

Things i have replaced recently or in the past that are still good parts and in good condition.

-tires 275/40/17 w/SS wheels- yes those are worse for mpg i no.
    -inflated good w/allignment
    -ac fuel filter
    -frequent oil changes
    -spark plugs and wires
-New cooling system w/ 180* thermo (pump, radiator/hoses, thermo)
    -seafoamed (every way)
    -K&n CAI (clean filter)
    -New cat
    -flowmaster catback
    -Bosch O2 sensors
    -serpentine belt or w/e
    -valve job w/ head gaskets

    Thats basically it.

I havent replaced coils yet or egr valve which i have seen to help out mpg and all. But coils are alittle expensive for me right now and My car is running fine so i dont think there the problem. I do have a pretty big hill that i have to drive up and then down again to get to my house and then the same thing leaving my house and i no that could have a huge effect but i still manage to get ****ty mileage without even getting rpms above 3000k.
ALSO, when i warm my car up every morning because its cold, i leave it idling for like 10 min every time so by the time i get out if will run smooth and not bogg at all when i give it gas. Is there any way that my car might be running rich at times like these? I dont no enough about cars but im just guessing.

    Any suggestions?

Have you in fact metered your mileage or are you just guestimating it? Have you had codes scanned? Coils are like $20 each, I would replace them. 16-17 is pretty bad. On a bad tank I'll get 20mpg and that's all city driving and getting on it pretty hard.

Re: help me with my mpg issue!

I have resetting my mileage whenever i fill up gas. And usually its when i barley have any and i put say $25 in(im getting about 7.14 gallons and i got around 90 miles this time... WOW huh.

i had my tranny flushed at 120,000 miles which was less then 10k miles ago with factory stuff, But still, my tranny drives pretty nice to what my friends think to. It only sometimes shifts hard into second gear when its cold and sometimes takes long to shift if its seeking higher rpm's.

Where in the hell can u get stock replacement coils for $20 each!!!!

Re: help me with my mpg issue!

ok well i found that i can get coils forlike $35-$50 each and thats alittle high on my budget right now so i will put them off.

Yes my car might be running very rich, how would i be able to change that?

When i start my car in the morning(facing downhill) some gas and smoke will come out my dual exhaust for the first 5 mintutes untill warm and my idle is at 1000 and has a inconsistant idle. BTW, my car doesnt run to good unless warmed up...

Any thing else u guys reccomend me checking out? Is there like some kind of checklist i can go down?

                  Suggestions:
1] bring air pressure to 33lbs in each tire
                  2] don't idle car...drive it.
3] don't sit at long lights burning up gas. Turn off the engine
if U know its a long light.
4] if you see the stop light ahead is red or just turned red
take your foot off the gas, why race up to a red light?
5] turn off ac when sitting at a light

honestly, not to bg a **** head. But i do all of these thing already, im pretty good at judging lights and speed of traffic and how much gas i need to give the car to make it to one place.

Re: help me with my mpg issue!

my car does the exact same thing yours does. runs really pissy when it's cold out, but give it a block or two the engine smooths out and it drives fine. I still haven't gotten a handle on things yet and it's kinda hard to troubleshoot a cold engine misfire when it's warm out. If you figure something out let me know.

Re: help me with my mpg issue!

can someone please help me out on this. Im still confused as to why my car isnt achieving better gas mileage.

Now sometime when i fill up my gas tank, my interior is smelling of gas,

Also, my car is having a hard time running smooth when i first start it up, thus wasting a **** load of gas waiting for it to warm up.

Any suggestions will help me, Except any of the main ones like plugs, wires, i have done alll of those little things except coils.

check the erg and egr selinoid. sometimes if thats faulty it could weaken the mpg
