How can one go about loosening a rusted bolt? If I think that the bolts are fused together is it even worth messing with. In this case it is the two nuts for the fuel filter that are rusted together and I do not know if I should try and break them apart.

    Any ideas...

Also an idea for the tutorial writers out there...

Maybe a guide telling people new to cars general tips when it comes to working on cars with common problems that people will run into while doing maintenance work. ie. rusted parts, transmission seal.

Things that are hard to do would be easier with a little insight...

I like liquid wrench. Penetrators work wonders on tightly rusted bolts if you spray them a few times over a few days.

PB blaster.... then use a flathead or a scraper and try to scrape some of the rust off of it yourself...

and with things like a drum... hit the drum with the hammer and watch the rust fall out, but hitting somthing like a fuel filter with a hammer would not be a god idea

I didn't know GM made a penetrator. How much does it cost?

I do not know. I get it free for work. Wouldn't bother myself using anything else

Are the threads that are not exposed to the elements going to be messed up and rusted too once I unscrew it? Because if they are I will have no idea what to do... Im wondering If I should even mess with it...

The inside threads are usually not rusted. I suppose they could be. When I replaced my fuel filter, the bolts were pretty tight in addition to the rust. Are you using one wrench to hold one bolt in place while using another wrench to loosen the other piece?

I've always used pb blaster, but what's this about the GM penetrant. Any dealership have this will they sell it over the counter?

Yes, they will sell it over the counter, but they will(at least our GM dealer) order it instead of giving you one of their own that they have in stock. The guy told me it had something to do with inventory and what not, that's why they couldn't just sell me one of their own bottles of the stuff.

And as for the inside threads being rusted, don't even worry about it. There should be zero percent rust on the inside threads, unless it wasn't tightened very well last time it was changed and was able to get moisture in it. But, I've never seen the inside threads rusted.
