my car has started to make a strange vibration. it's only noticible at low rpms. when i come to a stop and my car is idling, i smell exhaust coming out of my vents (with the windows up). also, i hear a rattling coming from underneath the car but i do not notice anything loose.
it is not throwing any codes...
    i have a 1994 firebird 3.4L. what's the first thing i should check?

i just did a lil more searching under the hood. it seems that on the passenger side, near the back two plug wires, there's a silver-ish thing that seems to have a hole blown through it.
i couldn't get a good picture of it, but it's just above the pass. side o2 sensor and below the plug wires, and it's silver.

could that be the problem, or is it a result of a bigger problem?

Do you mean the heat shield around the exhaust manifold? A heat shield itself won't cause problems like you are having, but if there is a hole in the exhaust manifold under it, that could be your issue. It could explain the fumes, and the heat shield could be the rattling.

When you start up the car you can feel for exhaust coming out of the manifold. You want to check before the car gets too hot, otherwise you will be burning your whole arm. You could poke around with a flashlight if you can reach it. If you had a hole, the car would also be louder then when before it had a hole. Is the car loud (besides regular exhaust and mods)?

            Re: strange vibration

alright, i was driving it to work and when i was accelerating onto the highway, the engine sounded like it was suffocating and i couldn't accelerate well....

coming back from work, i drove it a quarter mile and then it wouldn't go any farther. i managed to pull it into a nearby Midas parking lot, where it finally stalled. all the while the cab was filled with the noxious odor of gasoline and exhaust.

yeah the engine started to sound way more beast, i couldn't find a hole but that doesn't mean it isnt there.

it's gonna cost $250 to tow it all the way home...

fixed the problem completely. guess it was too much backpressure.
