Well my a/c compressor is shot. I think it is something in the clutch assembly because it started knocking and vibrating. it was still cold but vibrating and making the car run terrible but when i turn it off there is no problem. Can i just replace the clutch and pulley or do i have to buy the whole thing. if so what all will i need and how much will it cost. i want to do as much as possible myself for experience and savings thanks

Re: a/c compressor
well im pretty sure im the person to ask bout changing compressors and such, lol. i just recently replaced my entire a/c system.
if your going to do it yourself, you are gonna have to have a lot of patience, and if your gonna get a compressor, you will need to get other stuff otherwise you wont get a warantee on it, plus, its good to just replace system.
you would need:
compressor
orfice tube
accumulator
refridgerent (spelled wrong)
the compressor is a pain, you will need to access it from the back, and use a long extension to reach up into the engine to gain access to the three bolts that are on the back of compressor where the lines go into it. once those are off, theres 3 easy bolt in front of compressor and it comes right off.
everything else is pretty much right in front of you, ill explain in more detail if you actually decide to go and get the stuff, just let me know if ya got any more questions.

Re: a/c compressor
everything costed me 300 dollars, and thats with a special discount i get at about half off... so unless you know somebody, or have a connection, ur lookin at 500-600 bucks. and thats just in parts. if you made a shop do it, labor would be a lot.
but dont feel bad, u can always get a remanufactored one for about what i paid, only difference is its not brand new

Re: a/c compressor
yeah, if its just the clutch, just replace the clutch, dont mess with evacuating the lines, then vacing them down and recharging, i am doing my ac hopefully tomorrow if the dealership has the sealing washers i need, and i am lucky enough to work somewhere where i have access to any refrigerant i would ever need and the tools to deal with them

Re: a/c compressor
thanks guy. dp yall think its the clutch. i think maybe a bearing has gone out. because of the vibration and wobbling. do yall think that would be it. if it was the compressor wouldn't it stop putting out cool air and that type of stuff. thanks guys i would rather spend 50 then 500. dont want to replace everything because of one thing u know what i mean98 Mystic Teal Camaro

Re: a/c compressor
bah, car quest has sealing washers... we are talking about the sealing washers on the back of the compressor where the lines go into, correct? if so, car quest has them...
and mystic, my advice to you is to bring it to a a/c shop and let them diagnose for you, just have them tell you whats wrong, should only be 20 bucks or so for them to just look.

Re: a/c compressor
carquest was closed when i went around looking, and i couldnt make it over there for my lunch hour, i ended up paying $25 for 5 sealing washers, but it was worth it if my ac ceases leaking, its still working as of now and i fixed it wednesday or thursday, and mystic 98 i could sell you my compressor, i'm about 99.9% certain there is nothing wrong with it, and i know the clutch is good, i think my leak was going into the bottom of the condenser, but i just decided to replace compressor, hose, and dryer canister, let me know if you are interested

Re: a/c compressor
your going to need a compressor and the accum. once you have the a/c compressor go bad you will shoot metal shavings threw your system. they will either block up tubing or your will get them into the accum. so if you just change out the compressor you will end up putting the shavings into the compressor and kill that in a couple of hours. so make sure to change out both.
