v6 3.8 liter engine...I dont know too much about cars, whats the first few things I should look at?(for problems)...its being deleivered today.

Check the oil cap - smell it, see if there is a lot of carbon build-up. Make sure that the oil has been replaced properly and on-time. Listen to the way the engine sounds - make sure you don't hear any bizarre sounds. Check out the transmission oil, make sure it's clean.
Basically do a regular inspection of your car as if you were planning on going on a long trip.

Easy there Camaro_slp. Rust is something to look for in any used car. If you live by large bodies of water or if there is a lot of fog, like in my area, rust can eat up a new car in a few years. I had rust on my car after 3 years. What did GM say about it...."Gee thats too bad, thanks for calling". Check to make sure heat and air conditioning work good. Try and drive it at night and see if all lights come on in the interior and of course exterior. I made the mistake of never driving at night and found out one of my headlights was broken. Make sure those power windows go up and down real fast and also that your cd player works fine. Check for your spare tire, if it has t-tops, make sure they are in good condition. Also check the drivebelt to make sure it is not on its way out. Thats about all I can think of that I checked when I bought my car. It's always a good idea to take it to a mechanic before you buy it. Have them put it up on the lift and give it a quick check. Many mechanics will do it free of charge.
We've done that on all our cars. My car had a leaky oil pan, and we had them fix it before we bought the car.Matt

10-4 on the rust! (that's CB talk) I had the displeasure of finding it near the t-top framing after I got the car home. Also, check your lugs. The wonderful institution that sold me the car, as good of a deal as it was, let me drive it some 1100 miles home with lug nuts missing! Its a small thing, but easy to miss. Thank goodness nothing came off. Also, get a look at that oil pressure guage. Check to see if it comes up nice and pretty (60-70 psi) on a cold engine. Always the best insurance is to check the sellers reputation. If its a dealer, ask around, if its an individual, get personal with the questions. If he's on the up and up, he'll be more than happy to tell you anything you want to know. If he's greasy....run. Alternator, worn out shocks/struts, power window motors. If it's an AUTOMATIC, you need to check if the tranny is slipping or shifting crazy. Some of the 4L60E transmission have problems. Smell for burnt fluids. Look on the oil dipstick to see if it has any burned oil on it that you cant scrape off (typically means that they got the car really hot). Also, see if they are using a really thick oil in the motor, if they are, they might be trying to hide noises from the motor that you'll find when you change the oil. See if the car tracks straight down the road. Listen for noises that dont belong. And if you have the oppertunity, take it to a mechanic. oh man got it acouple hours ago, everything looks practically brand new only a tiny scratch on drivers side and a nick in interior...its incredible...checked the oil its fine...will be taking it to a mechanic tomorrow to get it inspected...wow i cant beleive how nice the car is...its a 2000 firebird btw...black...absolutely incredible car...i dont even beleive its mine when i see it in the drive way...lmao
