Installing your own gears is a pita. I finally finished mine today. If you've never done it before I would just let someone else do it. I didn't save much money and it was a big headache. At least I can say I did it though.
oh, and would 3.42 gears work better for my car than 3.73?
I hear 3.42's are the best option.
anyone have a link to where i could get some?
yeah, ls1tech, or a local board. you should be able to find a whole rear for anywhere between 200-350. you could do that swap with the help of a few friends. its much cheaper to just do this. if you swapped out only the gears, it would end up running about $600... and by doing the whole rear, you would get an LSD also.
to swap the gears you need to have everything EXACT. a lot of professionals still suck at gear installs. its the sort of thing that you want to have done by someone who really knows what theyre doing.
2002 SOM Camaro- Sold
2006 S60- Sold
2000 Cherokee- The desert whip
3.42's are the best for a straight up swap since you can find them in the newer Z's. Then all you do is swap out the whole rear end for yours. 3.73's would make you even faster though, but decrease your top speed and gas mileage a tad bit more though. But, since these are not a factory option, you would have to pay someone to isntall them (can be pretty pricey), or install them yourself if you have the right tools (which you most likely don't, unless you're a certified mechanic or have done it before). I just recently had the rear from a Z-28 installed in my car along with a set of 3.73's. I found the gears for $100 to my door brand new, and I was given the rear end. Then I bought the install kit, and had my uncle help me with everything. Total was just under $220 after oil and additive and all.
could it be you're only pushing down on the bottom end of the pedal? cuz it won't go down as far as if u push toward the top of the pedal and if you dont notice it you'll think there's a loss of power...until u slide ur foot up and u can actually get the pedal all the way to the floor...stupid thought but it fooled me for a while...couldnt believe how slow the car was but then i slid my seat up and got more foot on the pedal haha
Confirm that with the pedal to the floor is indeed WOT at the Metering Unit.
Tire differences between the two cars. A lower overall wheel height is like having lower gears.
Transmission performance - Your trans could be slipping or have higher internal resistance that slows you down. Also maybe your brother has modified shift points and tunning that both of you don't know about.
Maybe your catylitic converter is plugging up, too much exhaust restriction
Is your fuel pressure proper at WOT? Condition of your fuel injectors, proper spray pattern.
Dragging brakes?
Do a compression test of each cylinder.
Now Playing: \'99 Pewter Firebird, stock, bone stock, and nothing but stock, so help me God!
Comming attractions: K&N Filter, Lid Mod, Intake Bellows Smooth Pipe Mod.
I dream about: Forced Induction (TC or SC) or NOX (or both!)

haha i'm gonna try that pedal to the floor thing
our tires are practically the same height
my tranny is in far better condition than his (no he does not have modded shift points, he is friends with the guy who owned it before him so he would know, and the only person to have the car before him was a little old granny)
I can't believe my cat would be plugged, its high flow, and brand new.
honestly i don't know about the fuel injectors, or even how to tell
I don't know what dragging brakes are but they were just replaced in the front naught but 2 months ago if that means anything.
First I would do the compression test. Search the posts cause I've seen guys post their procedures. If you can't find, get a Haynes manual cause it has the procedure and tooling description listed. Compression check is very useful and could be where you find a problem with the basic engine (valve and rings leaks)
Then I would hook up a scan tool and start comparing parameters. Fuel flow, timing, engine temps, air inlet temps, etc....
Either your not producing the horse power to begin with, or your loosing it in the drive train.

As was said, tire size. Smaller overall tires are like better gears. Also, amount of tread remaining. A new tire can weigh 4-5 pounds more than a well-used tire.
Fluids. Check your trans fluid and rear end fluid, make sure neither is low or needs replaced.
Give that Jet chip another chance, run him with it installed and see what the difference is.

dude, that chip made me run like a 4 banger, 1 week after install the engine was sputtering, and it was throwin codes like micky mantle ( i don't know what i that means) but maybe i plugged it in wrong?? maybe it would work... technically it has a better chance of working because it is made for my car, i don't know why it didn't work. My tires ARE smaller anyhow...... by only a little. Though they are indeed new.....tranny fluid is fine, checked yesterday.... i don't know how to "check" the rear end fluid without taking off the cover..... added fuel injector cleaner yesterday, planning on seafoaming my baby 1 week from now, and a solid oil change 1 week after. Then maybe we will race again.
the only thing that would really add hp from the sound of it is the CAI, which isnt really all that noticeable anyway. your catback wont really add much of anything because your car isnt sucking in any more air than normal, so it doesnt have any extra air to push out, so a stock exhaust setup would do just fine. as far as the other mods go...they are just support mods to let you do other things to your car without having insane KR, such as super or turbo. also, you said you and your bro both spin the tires a lot on the start...try working on your launch so that he burns out while you hook up right away and get a better launch. dont just mash the pedal, find the sweet spot that launches your car.
Hey everyone! I've been trying to remove my transmission for two days now! I need to replace the clutch. Only thing I've got left holding the transmission...
Hello, so I changed the front bearings on the bird and the ABS inoperative light came on. I made a mistake of not removing negative battery cable. Now...
I usually have to double, triple my headlight switch for them to come up on my 97 Firebird. I cleaned all connections. Could it be the headlight switch...
