A month ago, I put on a new cat. sounds great at idle and throughout the rpm range, but when I rev it up to around 4k, and let off the accel, there is this terrible rattle. I have now been under the car for about 2 days and have come to conclude that it is the I pipe rattleing. It is not hitting anything, but it rattles like crazy above 4k. Why is it doing this, and how can I fix it? it has about 1/4 clearance between the starter heat sheild, and 1/2 inch between the oil pan.
I tapped on them and there seemed to be no noise, plus i just took off the cat heat sheilds only to find out that they arent what is rattleing. so im going to have to weld them on after school tomorrow if i decide to take off the heat sheilds on the car, right?
I checked, and replaced all the clamps, replaced the trans mount. When I tapped on the y pipe, it seemed to rattle, then i took off the clamps and tapped the pipe, and it was gone, but when I turned the car on, it rattled throughout the rpm ranges. Im going to take off the sheilds and see what happens.
I just had the same deal....It went away when I had my flowmaster dual put on. It was a loose rivet on the cat heat shield. If I was a bettin' man I'd say one of the heat shields....I found out it don't take much to get em rattlin'
