  • Coolant bleeding

    I know there is a screw on the thermostat housing. I have tried to bleed it and although I'm getting a steady stream from it, my temp is higher than normal. Thermo is only a few months old, rad is full 60/40 water/dex mix. My temp used to be around 180-190, now 220-240. Get's warmer with A/C on. Is there a bleeding write up anywhere? Thx

    you're supposed to keep bleeding it until coolant starts to spurt out...and that's pretty much all there is to bleeding the cooling system

      Should the cap be on or off? Should I rev it? Do I need to wait till the car reaches operating temp? Those are a few questions that come to mind.

        What year is your car? I've never seen a bleeder screw on the thermo housing before. I bleed mine from the drain **** on the bottom of the radiator.

            There is a bleeder screw on the thermo housing, it's not to drain the coolant, it's to bleed out air in the hoses once you've put new coolant in... you are supposed to drain the radiator through the drainc0ck.

            Candela, is your fan coming on at 210 like it should? If not, something could be wrong with the fan. If the fan IS coming on, it could be that you have a stuck thermostat.

              leave the cap on. You shouldn't be sitting in the car when bleeding the system, you should be watching it to look for spurting coolant. All you need to do is wait till the steam stops coming out

                that must be to bleed a 3.8 liter what about a 3.4 liter????

                  Thx for the reply's guys. I haven't monitored to see at what point the fan turned on, just checked to make sure it's moving. I'll check that.

                  Panther, It'll kinda be hard to turn the bleed screw from the drivers seat. j/k
                  I am standing in front of the engine watching the steam. I asked because there is a gap between spurts of coolant. Kinda thought of hydraulic bleeding. Open/close, etc...

                    No bleeder valve for you! Open up the cap and run the car. Keep a close eye so you can fill or throw the cap on before it overflows or anything.

                      Not to start another thread. After reading the replies here, I concluded that I have bled the coolant properly. I still have the overheating problem. The fans kick on when they are supposed to. I did notice that the temp rises to about 220 when the car is going more than 50 miles an hour. With the A/C on it goes to about 240. It doesn't stay there long though. Without slowing down, the temp slowly drops to 210-220 and then starts rising all over again. If I am idleing or at lesser than 50MPH, the gauge stays at 210. A lil warmer than I am used to either way. Any suggestions.

                        How old is your water pump? Sounds like the last thing to maybe replace....

                        Also, get a pressure test done on your coolant system. Its cheap and you never know.
