Re: Puh-lease help me diagnose mystery misfire before I go crazy

Went to Auto Zone today, and they claimed that there would be no codes thrown if there wasn't a SES light on. In any case, I think I'm going to pick up a new cat soon. Mine has been rattling for the past few months, and I think it's something inside the cat. I've tried putting a couple more screws into the heat shield on the underbody itself to see if it was the shield rattling, but to no avail.
However, I'm thinking my inconsistent power loss (at 1/2 to WOT) is something moving around and blocking flow inside my cat. The way I see it is thats the most restrictive part of the exhaust flow, and the more flow that goes through it during 1/2 to WOT is making something move around in there and restricting the flow even more. Becuase I don't notice anything when I'm just driving regularly.
Checked to see how hot my cat was tonight when I got home, and it seemed like it was pretty hot. More hot than normal, and I felt under the passengers seat, and it seemed like the carpet was warmer there than in other places. If the problem persists after the replacement of the cat, I suppose I've just checked that off the list of problems my cat has.

The cat was the last thing I replaced in attempt to fix the problem. It did nothing, but hey, at least I have a hi-flow cat now. I'm getting a fuel pump from ebay and hopefully installling it on saturday, we'll see if that is the problem

sure hope the fuel pump does it for you, cause that looks like a PITA job to do

The fuel pump definitely looks like a PITA. There wouldn't be a code for the malfunctioning fuel pump? That's strange... Guess they just wouldn't expect it to go up. But like you said, I've ran my fuel very very low before (without running out of course) and maybe that messed something up. Don't know... Good luck to everyone with this problem, and PLEASE post remedies for this problem if found.

Car finally threw a code today, took it back to AutoZone and it read a cylinder 3 misfire (P0303). I just bought some jet hot Pacesetters offline, and plan on doing my exhaust in about a month once I have enough money for the 2.5" Magnaflow Catback. While doing the exhaust swap, I plan to change the wires and plugs. I'm so glad I've narrowed it down to one thing. Until that time, I'll probably keep the car parked.

fwiw, I had a problem with misfire a while back.
once the misfire code set, and the wires and plugs were replaced, we figured out one of the coil packs was bad.
has run perfect since coil pack was replaced.
