  • Loud noise coming from pully system

    Hey guys,

I have a v6 3.4 liter 1994 Firebird. For the last few months or so, I have been getting a loud sound coming from the pully system. How it works is kind of weird though. If it has rained or is colder, the sound will be extremely loud and irritating. Also since it's now summer, the first time I start my car for the day, I will almost always get this sound. It's like a high pitched squeaking sound where you can hear the belt running. I'm sorry I don't know a real good way to explain it, but It is definitely coming from the pully system. The thing is, once I drive my car for about five minutes and especially if I give it a lot of gas, the sound will go away and won't return until the next day. So if I start my car in the morning to go to school, the sound will be very loud, by the time I get to school the sound is gone. i can then go to school, work whatever without having the sound. But then the next morning its the same thing. I took a towel and some sandpaper and just put it under the moving belt and held it there for about five seconds with the car running. This almost eliminates the sound completely for the day, but is no way helping in the long run and is really annoying. My question is, has anyone else experienced a similar squeaking sound with their car, or know how to fix it? I'm thinking that my entire pully system needs to be replaced. Thanks!

my sisters car does this, but she has a mitsubishi, and everyday when she first starts it it happens, or when its cold. she took it to the shop and it was already a new belt so they told her its the belt breaking in. i think thats b.s. and its just a crappy belt. try a new belt?

Hmmmm that's kinda weird. I guess I'll just try replacing the belt first. Thanks!

If you say a loud squeaking noise coming from the belt I immediately think the tensioner, but then you say it goes away, so I'm not sure now, but sometimes tensioners have weird ways of dieing.

If the belt doesn't work then I would suggest a looking are the tensioner, take a 3/8 drive ratch and try to turn the tensioner out toward the belt, then try starting it, if the sound isn't there then you've found your problem

Ok, we put a new belt on today so I'll let you guys know if that's what was causing my problem. It sounds great so far! Much quieter already.

If the belt doesn't fix it, then I would put my money on the tensioner. The fact that the sound goes away after it warms up is a pretty good indication.

Ok, it seemed to have been the belt because I haven't had any problems and it's running great!
