  • Need help with starting problem...

here's the story. i was driving home, car starts sputtering, and dies, crank it again, it cranks a little and fires, and sputters and dies again. now it will not start, it starts to turn over but will not start. its actually acting like there isn't enough juice in the battery, but it did the same thing hooked up to another vehicle.

just replaced alternator a few months ago, battery tested fine, only other thoughts are the iginition control module, or the crank position sensor. any help would be great, thanks!

Well I just went through a similar problem in my girlfriends blazer. It would start and as soon as it would start, it would die and every now and again it would stay running but it got more frequent so after alot of diagnosing and it turned out to be the fuel pump.

2002 V6 firebird, still has egr. this happened all of a sudden, no warning. hot even 1/2 throttle accelerating through a light.

i just dont understand how it would crank like the battery is dead, but autozone said the battery is good??

well i took my mechanics advice, and just bought a new battery for it, got it started and drove it 1/2 a block until it fu(ked up again, and now it sounds like a spun bearing. what a piece of sh!t.

after thinking about it, i had just had the lifters replaced because the intake gasket failed allowing water to get into the motor. ran fine for a couple days, but i guess he didn't get all the water out, and it got down to the oil pan. too bad it didn't just explode.

96, same problem , fuel pump. put the key in the on position and just see if you can hear it running. if so then it could still be bad but not making enough fuel pressure in the lines to keep it running. you would have to get a fuel pressure tester and attach it to the service port on the fuel rail.

check fuel pressure. could be the pump going out.

stupid thing to ask but...you do have gas right?

3/4 tank of gas, fuel pressure is fine. i think it was the beginning of a siezed piston which is why it wouldn't completely turn over.

Re: Need help with starting problem...

after talking to some of the local v6er's and doing a little more research online. i've found another possibility to my troubles. it could be a warped intake manifold causing water to get into the motor, and the reason it wouldn't turn over is because it was hydrolocked. sucks. so maybe its time for a new motor, maybe a v8 swap or maybe a new vehicle, we'll see...

Re: Need help with starting problem...

mine does the same type of thing from time to time. only it starts doing it when i turn the key... acts like the battery is going dead, when it has plenty of juice. if i let off the key for a few seconds and try it again it turns over a number of revolutions (normally it fired right up) but it will start and run fine.
i dont believe its due to hydrolocking though...
post up if you find out if it was due to something other than hydrolocking if you would.

one month later, and no REAL update, my mechanic says he's been busy and is supposed to be taking the oil pan off today...

he also said he stethascoped it and its coming from right behind the crank pulley. he thinks its a rod bearing...
