    hello I am new to these forums as far as posting, but I have visited this website for some time.

    Anyways, in the past year my transmission has been going out and I have had multiple instances of specific cylinder misfires and the "random cylinder misfire" code.

    Since then, I have replaced my transmission completely with an A4 Jasper that cost me $2500. I have read the very informative posting about the "Great Misfire Mystery" and used MSD wires, boot protectors, new spark plugs, heat sheathing, etc. I had that done two months ago if even and have rarely driven the car. Maybe 1000 miles if even.

    I had the transmission replaced 2 weeks ago. A new thermostat put in a week before that. And New ignition coils prior to that.


    I still had a misfire, due to a clogged catalytic converter.


    The Chevy dealership wanted an arm and a leg for one so I went on Ebay and bought a full Magnaflow exhaust with dual 3.5" tips that included a free Magnaflow High-Flow catalytic converter for $450. I had that all installed yesterday.


    And for future reference it sounds GREAT! it has no rasp and surprisingly sounds nothing like a fart can. It's the closest sound to a v8 coming off of a v6 ive ever heard.

    Anyways I STILL have a misfire. I was driving on the interstate at about 70 mph and my car was gradually over heating due to the misfire.


    The hose that goes from the radiator to the thermostat blewoff and I stopped right then. All the radiator coolant leaked out (obviously) and I had to get it towed.

    So It is back at the shop right now they wont start working on it until this afternoon.

    Can someone tell me what is still giving me the P0300 random or multiple cylinder misfire code? A fuel injector? A fouled spark plug(s) due to backpressure from the clogged catalytic converter that was previously on the car?

    And why did my hose blow off like that?


    Hope this helps anyone having these kind of problems but I'm just a little fed up with one thing after another I just want my car to work lol. Thanks

    Now anyone reading this reply is thinking "If it's CDNFB answering this He must think its something about head gaskets....".

    Misfiring causing overheating? I'm not convinced it would to that degree. I believe you had a vapor lock. It looks like you had a lot of work done in the last little bit, so I would tend to think that someone disturbed the cooling system and introduced air into the system, probably at that very hose, and that person also probably didn't secure the hose clamp. Put those two things together and you'll have the hose blow off.

    It's next to impossible for a rad hose to blow off like that if it was installed properly. The pressures required to do so would have been relieved by the rad cap.

    Could you have experienced a head gasket failure so massive that the gasses being pumped into the cooling system could not be bypassed by the rad cap fast enough, and the pressure built up and blew the hose off? Not likely.

    As for the misfiring....keep searching the posts....this is a common problem and there is lots more good advice from members here to follow.

      check your fuel pressure, my car was getting a random misfire code, and it couldnt figure out why, till my fuel pump went out and then i had it replaced

        jasper charges $2500 for a transmission or is that labor too. that is like $1000 more then it should be.

          No the 2500 was including installation.


          Now the place my car is at is saying because it overheated I have a knock in my engine...saying it's probably a bearing and recommending a new engine.


          Now what the heck should I do?

            If it's knocking after overheating, chances are the engine has had it!

            Who worked on the car last? Who was last to have touched the rad hose?

            I would have a serious talk with whoever you suspect screwed with your cooling system cause they are the ones who owe you a new motor.

            Bottom line is if your stuck with having to fix it, get a low milage used motor from the bone yard. Most cost effective solution.

              I'm assuming it was the Chevy dealership as they replaced the thermostat and the hose that goes to the thermostat is the one that popped off (where it connects to the radiator). I took it to a local auto place since they are the ones who installed my exhaust and the ones who towed my car from the side of ther interstate where it overheated, and broke down.


              Would the Chevy dealership even do that? They would probably deny it is there fault because thats how common people are.

                Of coarse they're going to deny any wrong doing. But I would march in there screaming blue-murder. They worked on it last and this happens? GM dealerships are supposed to have a service guarantee and you have to force them to honor it.

                  It's like CDNFB said, who touched the cooling system last. Did someone drain the cooling system and replace the engine coolant? For most 3.8 engines there is an air release valve on the thermostat housing tube that has to be bleed. GM has a specific procedure for doing that. Air may have gotten trapped in the system, which could have blown your hose off. Just something to think about and check out. Good luck, Tommy.

                    Well when I got it towed it was towed to a local shop and looked at and they fixed where the hose blew off now the Chevy dealer says they wont replace my blown motor cause I have no proof that their work was faulty.

                    This blows. Now I have to invest in a new motor. Im seriously considering an LS1. Can someone lead me to some info as to what is NECESSARY to do this swap?

                      I think that you needed to yell and scream a lot more than you did. As ugly and uncomfortable as it is, making a scene at the dealership can pay off.

                      For the LS1 swap, search the posts on this forum. Lots and Lots of info and knowledge.

                        i actually work for a dealer and the more you kick and scream the better off you will be, make sure you are talking to a manger and if that doesnt work tell them you wanna talk to the owner sense he will be paying the motor not GM.
