  • gasket sealant question

I just replaced the water pump, fixed my previous belt problem (so far) and i don't back fire anymore. anyway..like a retard my brother drained the coolant, added water and ran it through so now i have to drain and add coolant..

ANYWAY i replaced the water pump, hence a new gasket. i got some RTV and it says it dries in 1 hour and cures in 24. should i wait the 24 hours? would 16 be ok? cause i have some crap to do tomorrow..and what would adding water to allpurpose 5050 coolant do????(says dont add water, so i want to ask before i try anything.

ive actually used that RTV and right when i put it on i ran the engine... i really dont think you have to wait at all.. for full out driving i would wait if you could though.

Adding water will only dillute the coolant, changing it's boiling and freezing points, and reducing any lubrication and anti-corrosion qualities that it has. So....don't add water to it. It sounds like it's already pre-mixed for you.

As for the RTV. The cooling system doesn't produce enough pressure to affect joint that is sealed with RTV. Once the engine gets hot, the RTV will cure much quicker. I've seen it cure within an hour with the engine at operating temperature.
