• Emissions-WTF?

I just moved to TX and for the 1st time I had to have my car inspected. Well I failed emissions. This I do not understand. My cat is <1 year old (3" Catco), the O2 sensors were put in at the same time as the cat, the plugs are less than a year old, the EGR is >2 years old.....The really strange thing is, when I disconnected (I installed a switch) my Jet chip, the Hydrocarbons then raised over the limit and the NOx increased even more.

    1. Why would I fail emissions with a new cat and O2 sensors?
    2. Why would the emissions increase even more w/o the Jet chip? Did I not allow the computer time to compensate? But does it need time to compensate when it gets reset due to the loss of power?

    WTF?

    1. Move to Taylor Co. no e-check.
    2. check for cracked hoses, egr hoses & what not.
    3. drive for about 1 hr before going to the e-check place. make sure the cats are really HOT!!!!!. while waiting for tech, keep engine revving.

You said plugs are less than yr old, how are wires?

your computer needs to learn everything over again before you car goes back to normal. around 30 mile if you reset your PCM or about one week just driving around w/o the chip. Bad plugs, wires and coils can also cause you to fail. If you car is not burning all the gas then it goes out the pipe. A CAT can only catch so much. Good luck passing next time

Wires are good, they are taylor and a little over a year old.

I took side streets to the shop, took a good 20 minutes...are you saying the cat was not hot enough?

Also, if my emissions are that far off, why is my computer not adjusting? Isn't that what O2 sensors are for?

Who has an address in Taylor I can use?

I think you would need to have the car registered in that county, not just give a bogus address???

I know that another board member, Brett, recently went through similar issues here in Dallas with his 3.4L. He changed O2's, plugs & wires, cat. I think he finally passed after 3 attempts once some work was done on the EGR. He was also running a new Catco, like you, so unless yours is bad, that shouldn't be the problem. Might want to look into the EGR if you think everything else is ok.

yeah, I lived in Abilene for 4 yrs. we didn't need no stinkin e-check :D

Here in OH,& I think in VA too, they have a possible waiver process, where if it will take over a certain $$ to fix the problem they will issue a waiver. see if possible & get estimate from authorized e-check repair station ;)

sent my results to the "smog tech" on cz28.com....he thinks my cat was not hot enough. I will try again on Sat, before hand I will drive on the Hwy for an hour or so, that should do it.

My solution - live in KANSAS !

They don't jack you around for emissions at all (hell, run straight pipes if you want),and they only do vechicle inspections when you buy a car.

But seriously, people - just write in and ***** to your senator or state rep. about it. Generally, it only takes about 18-20 responses to sway their opinion. I'm not kidding about that, either.

My best wishes on the test are to you, dude.

writing really wont help. That's state revenue your dealing with.

edit: in the DMV, they should have pamphlets on what couties are e-check counties. Also, since I no longer live in TX, I don't have to worry about inspections & as long as I'm in the military, my drivers liscence will not expire until I go back & renew :D

We didn't have emissions here either until May 1 this year. Actually, they tried it a few years ago, then got rid of it, and brought it back again. That is why I would never assume it won't matter. Some people who run without emissions equipment are safe now, but you never know when that may change, and then you are stuck with having to reinstall equipment and possible change out entire systems.

quote:
That's state revenue your dealing with.

We did have state 'safety' inspections here before hand. You know, where they check your lights, horn, look for propery emissions equipment, etc. Now that was all about revenue. At least there is some basis for checking emissions other than financial gain.

Yeah in FL and SC I did not need them, when I lived in CA I did not register the car so now it is time to pay the piper.

                            Never think you are safe.....

Boy, emissions test make me love MS. I could spew nuclear waste out of my tailpipe and probably not arouse any unwanted attention. :D :D
