well i have kumhos and it took me 9 hours to get home, going up hill ins top and go traffic. If i can do it with kumho solus kh16s, you should be very well off with snow tires. I had no weight in the back, and tank was about at half

I had a VERY hard time in the snow with my bird. I usually store it for the winter, but we got a freak storm during spring break and I had such a hard time with my summer tires. It started out with just a little bit of snow, and I thought it would stop after a while. I picked my friend's gf up from her house and went to his house. There is a hill that leads up to a stop sign, but I knew if I stopped I wouldn't make it. So I went through in second gear and was still spinning. I just barely made it... The way home, however, was horrible. Luckily it was 3AM and there was nobody on the roads, including plow trucks. My rear end got loose with the slightest tap of the gas. I slide across the whole rode about 5 times before I pulled over and called my buddy to follow me home. He even had a hell of a time in his little Neon winter beater, and said he almost slide off the road a few times as well. I finally did make it home, with slush/ice buildup on all my fenders. That is something I never want to do again. I'm sure with winter tires it would have been better, but I can't see it making a drastic difference. I had some weight in the rear (subs and box), and I have LSD. I would say get a cheap winter beater for the winter.

good winter tires are like night and day. my '03 sentra spec v - with contisport 'all-season' (no such thing) - couldn't make it up one hill. so i turned back and installed my winter tires. i got to work eventually. lsd, and no abs...no problem. in snow, you don't want abs...you want to lock your tires to build a wall up in front of them to help you slow down.
also, having a full tank of gas, besides being 100+ lb, minimizes air space above the gas. you'll get less consensation, and water in your gas.

Last thing you want to do is lock your tires up...ABS is extremely helpful in bad weather conditions...thats what it is meant for

As already stated, this is incorrect. Never lock up your brakes on snow. Once you start sliding, you have officially lost control, and you are along for the ride.

locking your tires up will just make you slide out of control, not stop hahahhaha
i have driven a RWD car with ABS, and a FWD car without ABS, and i feel much safer in the RWD car while driving in snow
First year I had my car I was able to do like 4 to 8 inches of snow with regular goodyear eagles, they were pretty new at the time. Last year, when PA had its ice/snow on Valentines day, my car sat till Friday. I couldn't even move it out of the space it was parked in! I am thinking about getting the Michelin X-ice and trying those. Or something like them. I think with good tires and weight, and taking it easy, you should be ok.
haha i remember that storm, I tried making a turn to quickly, and I just slidddd like an air hockey puck and bam into the curb. Came away with nothing but scratches on my rim though, thank god.

that happened to me ALL of the time, i was driving with bald tires up front.
thankfully my car always stopped a few inches away from the curb
I hate having bald tires up front... I'd rather have them in the rear during snowy roads. When they spin atleast I can decide which direction I'm going... but with bald up front I can't decide what I want to hit :)

This is the main reason I put a Powertrax diff in my car. Some cheapo snow tires on the stock rims (yeah, I don't match a few months of the year) and I am good for climbing hills, even unplowed if it isn't too deep. Seems the LSDs don't help much because you have to already be losing traction to engage, but as long as I am keeping the wheel straight I am pulling x2 from dead stop.

You run 15's too? I think the 15s are better because it allows me to run a skinnier, taller tire. skinnier tires will cut the snow. 205/70R15 ftw
