So for the past month or so I have had the Low Oil Light come on and off (mostly on) even though the oil level is perfectly fine. I have a rear main seal oil leak that is pretty bad so I assume that oil covered the sensor and it's going bad.
So my question is...
#1. Is this the sensor I need? It's a 1995 3.4L
#2. How easy is this to install? It looks like one side threads into the oil pan and then a harness plugs in on the other side...is that correct?
I just finished installing that sensor today. Yes that is the correct part you have there, GM part number #12603782. Easy to remove and replace.
1st step - drain your old oil and carefully pry off the little harness cap with a small flat headed screwdriver. Proceed to pull or wiggle the harness plug outwards. Make note of the factory installed clock position your sensor is so you wont have to fight guessing how to reinsert the harness plug when almost done.
2nd step - unscrew the old sensor off by using an open end wrench. Clean the oil pan threads while your there too.
3rd step - install sensor and tighten snugly, don't overtorque it. No need to use anti-seize on the new threads of the sensor or pan. Just make sure you finish turning the sensor in to an acceptable feel without stripping the nylon threads and reinstall the harness plug and cap. Refill your motor with your favorite synthetic oil and filter, very important!
Upon firing up the motor, you should have eliminated your Low Level Light problem.
Happy Wrenching!

do you have any idea why it went bad?
one of the wires on my sensor was completely cut in half at the shop a while back, and the light only came on intermittently, which I thought was odd.
