  • OMFG! WTF is this?

Someone help! I was driving down the road today when I suddenly got this incredibly bad, heavy vibration. I parked it at the next convenience store and popped the hood. As it turns out, when I turn on my AC, it starts up again and it's also very bad when the car is idling, or near idle. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's my compressor. Here's a pic. Let me know what you think! i really need to get this fixed. I often run my AC to turn on the radiator fan to help keep the car cool. A manual fan switch is in the works.

      bad bearings?

my ac pully made a noise too...

but putting the AC on will just mean more work for the engine...pretty sure that will not cool it down...

Look at it Tom! The front of it is blown out by about 3/4 inch or so! And this is no small noise! It's a huge heavy vibration. And as for the turning the AC on to cool the engine, yeah, you're right. But it does turn on the radiator fan. That helps cool everything.

what do you mean? are you saying it's a bad thing to install a manual fan switch? I haven't yet.

Clutch on it probably broke. Doesn't look like the factory compressor with the clutch that has the three bars in a triangle shape.

The red paint? Lmao. The engine bay isnt exactly in the best of shape. That's paint...I guess. lol. As for the clutch breaking, how would that happen?

                    Re: OMFG! WTF is this?

Ok, thats your A/C compressor. The clutch is probably fried.

And never ever turn your A/C on to cool your car off, the A/C cools the PASSENGER COMPARTMENT DOWN not the engine. A/C makes the engine run hotter. To cool the engine blast the heat. (wow I might have just saved an engine)

                      Re: OMFG! WTF is this?

well with my car (and I'm not sure if this is just mine or not, because of someone who previously owned the car or whatnot) when you turn on the AC, the radiator fan is also turned on, whereas if the AC is not on, the Radiator fan cuts on at 215 degrees. I have noticed a big difference in water temp since I have been doing that. Whereas a 40 minute trip (on a hot day) used to shoot the water temp way up there, it often doesnt get above 160 - 180 when I turn on the AC, also turning on the radiator cooling fan. So should I still not use the AC to turn on the radiator fan even after I get this fixed? I just went out and bought a belt for the engine without air. Would I be right to assume that the engine will be a little peppier now without the belt being run through the compressor? Oh, and thanks everyone for the responses.

oh nevermind... i thought you said that you "already" had a switch wired up and it was ran to run when you turned the A/C on....

                        oops lol

                          Re: OMFG! WTF is this?

well. lmao. I didn't go get a new or new used compressor. What I did was go to AutoZone to get a belt for a non-AC 93 3.4 Camaro. Heh. What I didn't know was, when these cars come without AC, they have a pulley in place of the AC compressor. The difference in belt size for AC and non-AC is half an inch. I went back and forth to AutoZone 6 times, all to no avail. This morning, I went out to NAPA and bought a belt that was an inch shorter than the one I ended up with last night, which almost fit. After some wrestling with it, the belt is now on the car. The only thing different is that the compressor is not in the mix. It runs great! A little peppier than before, too.
