  • Camaro may be on it's death park :-(.

Well after having changed the catalytic converter last tuesday and having bought new tires this morning i had a more fatal break down tonight. I decided to go out and drive around in the rain after the storm at about 10 PM to check out how the new tires handle on the highway. I was not driving very fast, cruising at about 75 when I see the red check gages light come on and see my oil pressure drop rapidly. Being next to an exit i swerved into it and parked and turned the car off within about 30 seconds of seeing this occur.

I opened the hood of the car to take a look, oil covered the entire engine bay. I called my insurance company who called a tow truck. The driver got there and immediately knew the problem after seeing the engine bay sprayed. He got his light and pointed at the oil filter, bingo, the thing was unscrewed and barely hanging on. He said the shop he runs does oil changes and it's happened there before, basically someone threaded on the filter and poured in oil then forgot to torque it on tight. So 2K miles later, Houston we have a problem. He said this is why he does not hire kids any more because they are too easily distracted and it can cost thousands of dollars in damage or worse.

So taking his advice we screwed the filter in as it looked fine to me and added 2 qt of oil. I cranked it had normal oil pressure and it sounded okay at first but then after closer inspection I can hear a ticking and a sound I can't really describe but it sounds like a bad bearing. Now my car is parked at a gas station (with their permission) across the street from a chevy dealership waiting for the thing to open.

This is the second quick oil change related incident that I've had this year. At this point I think I'm doing oil changes my self from now on. I do have a good mechanic for other work who is a friend and charges very very fair prices (for instance $150 for a catalytic converter part & labor when midas wants $800.) But going to him for an oil change is just not fast and not convenient.

Has anyone had related experiences? I managed to get money out of Jiffy Lube last time for the oil pan they ruined, so I think I'll manage to get Kwik Car Lube & Tune to do the same if I need a new engine, but tips and your experiences would be appreciated!

dude if u love cars, then changing the oil is fun and easy. you can buy your own stuff so u can give your car the best oil change (my last cost tons of $) can you say royal purple, and k&N gold class??

plus if u fock up, you know who's to blame

It is easy to change oil hence why its so lame that 2x in less than 12 months I'm having to get repairs done due to someone else doing a bad job changing it. The main problem really is time due to my heavy work schedule (im a programmer and system admin). And i'm usually to tired to even think about 'doing something' when I have time. But I think I will start doing my own from now on as you can't trust others to do a good job these days.

this is the reason why you change your oil yourself

You just got a bad filter. First off, oil filters are NEVER "torqued" they are hand tight, no matter what. Thats how you rupture a seal. Second, if the filter was loose, the car would have pissed oil the second the lube shop fired the car up. Oil changes on V6 Camaros are rediculously easy, you can pull the filter off from the top!

And I bet Jiffy Lube didn't ruin your oil pan. I bet a million bucks the place you took it to before them ruined it and said nothing. Then Jiffy Lubes lower bay tech pulled the plug, let it drain, and reinstalled it only to find that the pan was stripped. I was a Lower Bay tech, as well as a Manager for a few Jiffy Lubes and I cant tell you how many times that has happened.

Right you torque the filter by hand, I didn't say you use a tool. You turn it 2 quarters in after it's not freely threading then it's tight and perfect. If it's a bad filter how come it screws in and tightens perfect right now?

Well guess what, Jiffy Lube did break my pan, which is why they paid me, because after they last changed my oil the next time they said they couldnt get the drain plug out having over-torqued it previously. It ended up just spinning when they tried to get it out. The shop admitted it was their fault, their corporate people were the ones being *******s. Which makes me wonder who you work for now 0.o

** O yea so I could really use that million as I'm gonna have to talk to the dealership in an hour :). **

Was the seal on the filter? Were the threads on the filter damaged? Was it the correct filter? Did you check all of the above?

Well guys I talked to my trusted mechanic (the only 100% honest mechanic ive ever met who is worth his weight in gold) and he says it should be about $400 or $500 max to fix, I need a new oil pump unless this one just seized up which is causing the timing chain to cause the noise I'm hearing as oil stopped pumping. The engine should be fine though. The threading is fine, so most likely it was not tightened properly. If anyone wants to see pix of what it looked like:

*Edit: Pix were taken with a flash and accidentally in macro mode so thats y colors look weird. Pix are about 2M a piece so 56K's shouldn't bother!

i have to torque my filter down VERY tight to keep it from leaking, that isnt always true

I love changinge my oil because while its draining I clean up under the car... a shop will only do the job as fast as possible. They look at quantity over quality. I had one place actually take my filter out to shake it off I guess and not put it back in... I saw it and caugh it right when he started up the car. Then one dealership didn't refill my tranny fluid when changing it... I found that out the next day on the interstate :(

Your oil pump isn't bad if your getting oil pressure. I have blown 3 oil pumps in an old 69 Ford due to excessive clearance. Point is oil pressure means the oil pump is working. Is the pressure low? If its only ticking you hear thats proubably just the lifters. The timing chain will make a slapping noise if the oil passage is plugged and its starved of oil... I had an S-10 too... without knowing what it was i drove that truck about 5,000mi making the noise. If you hear knocking you have much bigger problems.

I'm not getting pressure any more :( hence the dead pump. The time chain is slapping for the exact reason u mentioned. I guess I didn't describe the noise correctly.
