I never really checked my MPG because I always fill up when I am 3/4 "full", and just put $20 in.

Yup, gauge is not accurate. Drops really fast after a while.

My 3.4 averages 16-18 mpg. I don't know why and at this point I don't care. It runs so great that I am not going to mess with it.

X2!!! RadRacer said it best! SEAFOAM!!! Do everything he said but do the Seafoam first! You will notice a massive difference just after that. It will more than pay for itself!!!

GOSH!!! i'd love to get 300 miles out of a tank
most i've gotten is 200 and that is ABSOLUTELY FEATHERING the gas, no taking off hard or anything like that.
          so 200miles / 14gallon tank =14.2mpg! WTF?
i mean yea its a lt1 but 14mpg? i've done a full tune up and regular oil changes

The tanks capacity is actually 16.8 gallons if i remember correctly. if i drive my '02 nice it gets great mpg, but if i kik the piss out of it it burns gas like a mother. I'd agree with everybodys previous ideas, all of which sound like good things to try. give them a shot and let us know what happens!

              Re: crap gas milage?

I get about 250 miles on a full tank in the city, but on the highway it would be close to 450 miles. I don't think that is bad for a 5 speed with 3.42s.

I usually get ~370 miles out of every tank in my 97 3.8. And i dont hardly do any highway driving at all.

                    Re: crap gas milage?

When driving on the highway I get just about 300 miles give or take out of my 99 camaro v6's tank, but at lot of that is at speeds of over 80mph which is why it could be better. The worst I ever got was about 200 miles but that was 100% aggressive city driving. If I'm light on the gas and do highway miles only i can break 300 easy, id say 350 is probably the best u can expect to get if you drive somewhat agressive but still reasonable. Driving like a normal person I could see getting 400.

                      Re: crap gas milage?

3 weeks ago, I replaced my faulty EGR valve, very easy to do and saw my mileage jump from 370 miles to the tank to 410 on the average now. I'm happy with the results. I'm sure more miles can be attained with an improved exhaust flow versus stock.

I run all highway miles on Royal Purple 10W30. Nearing 4000 miles on it, I'm going to change it soon.

Yes, Seafoam the motor before the oil, filter and spark plugs are changed.

ya. mine does the same thing. when i fill'er up, i see that it is past full. i can drive like this for a good, what i suppose to be, 3/4 of a tank. then it starts dropping as if it were a 4 gallon tank. is there an easy fix for that.

                          Nope, no easy fix.

You would have to take the fuel pump module out of the tank and then reposition (bend) the float arm so the float sits higher in the tank.

                            Re: crap gas milage?

Just recently I started experiencing the same issue. I was averaging 23MPG, which I wasn't happy with after reading that some are getting upwards of 27.

I replaced my fuel filter, last part of a full tune up and coincidentally and almost immediately I noticed the drop in MPG. right now I am averaging 15-16MPG. I know my clutch is shot and hopefully the clutch will be in before Sat. Have an appt with my mecanic and he's gonna replace it for $250 labor.

I have an CAI, 3in cat back, hi flow magnaflow cat and pacesetters. It's a '96 maro.

Soooo.... Did you get that Sea Foam in there yet?

I myself get over 400 a tank, including city. But no AC in the city and going 80 - 85 on the highway, sometimes over 100 :D Sea Foam is everything!!!
