  • A few general questions for a high school newbie

alright, im currently a Junior in High School, im 17 (so yes, a highschool budget). I have a 3.4L 1994 Camaro with about 49,9750 miles on it. Everything in the car is stock except 4 new speakers and a cd player. Like i mean no engine mods or anything of that sort. I decided to put this in general because its on a lot of different topics, and yes i know what the search funtion is.

I have a few questions about modding my car

    1. What is the best exhaust system? catback. ive been looking at this one http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/cg...ter/17356.html

Im looking for a great sound, like not ricy and a good roar to it, im not really caring about performance that much although id like some performance gains.

    2. I was looking at replacing my gauges with this. http://www.directcarparts.net/product.asp?3=91

i wanted to know how hard is it to replace these? would i have to get me gauges reset after this?

    3. I was wondering about replacing my headlights with good xenon ones. I was looking at doing this http://performanceworks1.com/headlightmod.htm
but im wondering if thats the best thing to do?

    4. I wanted to put in a cold air intake system, now ive heard that you can like make your own? or buy one. i was wondering what the best thing to do is?

    5. Next i was looking for some nice rims, ya know the shiny ones... any reccomendations?

are there any other mods that i should do? something quick and easy?

here is some pics of my car, old pictures but you get the idea. my car is a lot more shiny and clean now.

As a senior in college taking 18 hrs/semester...I understand the money issue. My recommendation would be to sit down with your list of what you want to do and decide what's going to come first, second, and so on. Then once you know what order to do things, research each one on it's own instead of dumping all this information in one post. I have just started "playing" with my car and decided I really wanted the intake and exhaust first. So that's what I did and finally got a really good deal on a SLP CAI. Now I'm looking at exhausts and getting opinions and such. You've gotta take it one step at a time, and put each step where it goes. Post in the intake and exhaust section about your car and see what people say. Then post in the apperance about your wheels and get their opinions. But I will tell you this, it finally comes down to your opinion. You can get some AWESOME techincal advice on this site, but as far as what do people think is best for your car, that's gonna come down to you because it's your car and it's what you like. So figure out what you want to do first and then get some ideas and feedback from other people. As far as all the stuff you mentiond, here's my $.02

    1) For exhaust, I've heard quite a few people say flows are the best value when it comes to sound and performance. I myself am getting the Borla cat-back, I like the look and sound of it a little better myself.

    2) I'm not a big fan of indiglo gauges. But looking at those, I bet it would be just like any other indiglo swap and there's a ton of info about that in the apperance section.

    3) The headlights thing is kinda tricky. I've heard of some people doing it and loving it, and others who hated it. That mod itself I don't think is the best thing to do. Here's a post about a guy who bought a conversion kit and really liked it. I think they're pretty reasonable too.

4)I love my CAI. For the amount of work it took to put and the price I paid, I couldn't be happier. I found a used one in the FOR SALE section and paid $100 (with shipping). I've heard of building homemade ones, but for the price, I figured this was much easier, and I think it looks better. I definately recommend it.

    5) For rims, I would go with some of the chrome firebird 5-spokes. I think those are pretty nice looking. But that's just a personal opinion. Look around the apperance section at what people have got on their cars and it'll give you a good place to start.

As far as any other mods, I'll tell you what someone told me when I started. You gotta decide if you wanna be all show or all go. As far as show goes, maybe some headlight/taillight covers or a 160* thermostat. It's all up to you. I hope this helps you out. And feel free to ask all the questions you want, cause trust me, I've asked plenty myself and everyone has been really helpful.
