what does drive-by-wire mean? are our cars DBW? I know they have cable actuated throttle plates, but does that matter?

Re: Drive-By-Wire?
Yes, you have Drive-by-Wire.
It means there is not longer a cable going from the gas pedal to the throttle body. The opening and closing of the throttle plate is now electronically opperated.

Re: Drive-By-Wire?
Yes, 99+ are referred to as "DBW" as the TB position is controlled by the PCM. When you push the pedal down, the PCM decides the actual throttle position - not you.Robert - owner www.FirebirdV6.com/CamaroV6.com

Re: Drive-By-Wire?
really? i had always thought F-body's were cable actuated. even fourth gen's. ok i read the '99 section of the link, this is interesting. reading this has brought up another question. it says "For Y87 automatics, there is a PCM update from GM that will "correct throttle lag during heavy acceleration. For non-Y87 automatics and all manuals there is no correction because GM decided that there is no need for one" could someone explain this? because i am planning on doing an A4 to M5 swap, and i currently have a Y87 automatic. ill lose this with the swap due to PCM switching, so would i be able to program something similar to this with HP tuners?Last edited by DHiser27; 08-27-2007, 04:45 PM.

Re: Drive-By-Wire?
you are going to manual? May I ask why? Do you plan to do heavy mods later on down the road to make some decent power? If so then stay automatic. If not and you just want a manual then ya go for it.
When you go to manual you just need hptuners and you can load up a manual file on your computer. I have never heard of GM changing trans settings for y87 cars...but anyways that wouldn't matter to you anyways if you were manual as the trans tables are zero'd out.

Re: Drive-By-Wire?
to me driving automatics is somewhat boring. manuals are more fun and i enjoy having something to do with running the car other than just pushing gas or brake. manuals are just more fun, and its worth it to me. yes i do plan on modding my car, intake, exhaust, headers, cam, valvetrain upgrades, and supercharger, but not for dragracing, just because i want my car to beat your run of the mill GT's and T/A's with only CAI's and exhaust.
that was a direct quote from this websites technical database. what does "correct throttle lag during heavy acceleration" mean? why would there be lag?

Re: Drive-By-Wire?
only lag would by torque management or something. But I see no differences in the y87 files and a normal non-y87 car when I check them on hptuners.
Thing with a manual is that the v6 manual cannot handle serious power unless you pay big bucks to get it built up. Anyone going for 11s or low 12s do auto trans swaps or have autos.
