  • Noc sensor?

    Today when I started the car the Service Engine Soon light came on. So I was like "it's on my list to stop at AAMCO to check my trans before the warranty is up." I stop by AAMCO and they ran the codes for me. They said it was a NOC sensor. I asked them what it does and they all went "We don't service / deal with Noc sensors. You have to take it to a mechanic." So driving the completely under-powered Firebird down Route 17 today was just bleh. I brought it to my mechanic where he said the Noc sensor was nothing to worry about. I left my car there to get checked over and I should have it back in the next few hours. (Also had them install new rear springs.)

    My question more or less is: what is a "Noc sensor" and why would it come on right when I started the car? Why would the car feel completely under-powered and feel like it's not shifting right--even when AAMCO the transmission specialists couldn't feel it?

    I had a 1980 Z28...just bought it...no knocks...but on the highway home completely lost power, I say 100 ft later I threw a rod through the block. I used AAMCO once before...I wasn't a big fan of them, every answer they had consisted of a complete tear down of the tranny...all they saw was dollar signs...!!!

      A knock sensor detects if there is any Knock happening within the engine and reads it. Knock retard is bad for engines and will ruin them. If an engine is knocking the timing and/or fueling have issues.

      hopefully it is just a faulty knock sensor and not your engine going

        Fuel as in how it's being delivered to the engine through the lines? I also had an evap code, which I was told could be from my gas cap all the way to lines that run to my engine. Maybe that could be the cause of it? Unless you meant the octane, which in that case it's almost always 93.

        I had it down at the mechanic by me, one of the guys there worked for GM, so he looked at the car. He can't feel or see anything, so he believes it was a spoof. He also cleaned the connectors and says the sensor is good.

        I simply do not have the money for a new engine right now. My last year of college, bills, and little to no work over the semester. Though the thought of a new engine does sound pleasing because it'll be out of the box, so I can mount it somewhere and add on toys to it before I drop it in.

          :slap: never, ever, ever go to scAAMCO :slap: They are second rate non-skilled people posing as mechanics. They screwed me out of $2500.

            When they replaced my transmission in the 1985 Berlinetta-Camaro it has been working perfect for 5 long years. The AAMCO I went to in Cherry Hill, NJ did a great job and they were able to answer my questions, but it cost me nearly 1800$. Not a hitch in any part of that car since then.

            With this 1998 Firebird, it doesn't feel right to me at all. I ask them questions and they can't answer me. I wonder if it's because I had them do it for 891.58$ because I told them I was out of a job and 2100.00 was going too much for me. So they took off Labor and some other fees. Makes me wonder if they did a second-rate job now.

              I dont care if its a mechanic or a plumber...you never go with anyone who's price is negotiable. Why couldn't they do it for 891 the first time around? I got a company here in Ohio and I'll tell you why....they are cons and rippin you off! When I give a price...I give my absolute best price. If they dont like the price then I tell them how long the quote is good for and send them on their way. Shop around next time....and never tell them how much money you have to spend. If you tell them you only have 1,000...then guess what...the price will be 989....when it should only be 600... Just watch out for yourself.

                knock retard itself isnt bad for anything... it just robs you of power. Its the precombustion (the knock) that can melt your pistons. and yeah, if you scan the codes, you should be able to see how the knock sensors are acting. we have two of them on our motors, so if one of them is screaming and yelling and the other one is being reletively quiet, then the loud one is probably bad. (as long as your getting SOME signal from the other one. a dead sensor is no good either)

                  Well today was fun. I was headed home from college today to beat the traffic (Navy v. Rutgers, go Rutgers!). Anyhow, I came to a complete stop at a tollbooth--When I went to accelerate the car. It rev'ed to about 6500 RPM (Obviously in Drive, haha) moving only about a few inches. I was like "oh /crap/!" Then it dropped down to 4500-ish RPM and the car jolted forward rocking me about a little bit. Then it shot forward a little too hard and fast for my liking out of a tollbooth.

                  Anytime I flooded it after that I hit 4100 RPM max, nothing higher. The engine temp was right between 160 (or does it start at 180?) and 210. Never reached 210 even when I got off to Turnpike and onto city streets.

                  I took it right to the mechanic after that, because I noticed the car was leaking something. It looked like coolant, but I wasn't sure. Kind of a green-ish/brown substance with no smell. (I was hot an muggy out today, so it made it a bit difficult to pick up on any smell.) As it turns out they said my water pump went.

                  Could this be the cause of all the what feels like the transmission?
