    I'm sure that's how they do it, but it's not how GM does it.

    "Why would they make an ECU engine rev count down when they could use a $3 switch to tell you when the filter is getting clogged."

    Because they're trying to figure out when the oil is worn out, not when the filter is clogging. On a car the oil goes before the filter does. On the equipment you're talking about, it may be the other way round.
