• 2001-2002 Possible 160stat Cure

I wrote Zoomer the following last night:
<blockquote>quote:</font><hr>
Zoomer,
I wrote you earlier about having my PCM flashed to the 2000 PCM code and you told me you could do that. I was scanning your website and you wrote:

"For some people running the engine too cold will set an SES light. To get around this you can put a 16-20 k ohm resistor in place of the air intake temp sensor... "
http://www.zzperformance.com/zzp/inf...liminatekr.htm

Now, do you think this would cure the 2001/2002 160°F stat PCM incompatibility issue? Currently running a 160 stat in an 01/02 Fbody V6 will cause the following problems:

- SES light stating coolant temp sensor voltage is too high (too cold water temp)
- Kill the water temp gauge
- Turn the coolant fans on high and run them continuously until the PCM is reset

I wouldn't mind it so much if it didn't kill the gauge and run the fans on high continuously. I have attempted in the past to mess with the coolant sensor by attaching a resistor in parallel with the circuit and fool the PCM - but this did not work as far as I know. I was hoping my hypertech power tuner would fix my PCM and allow me to run the 160 stat, but it doesn't, and hypertech is aware of this issue but won't do anything about it.

Do you think this would work - or should I still let you reprogram my PCM? I know the reprogramming will work if it is 2000 code .

Thanks again,
Dominic

"The resistor trick should work fine for your car."

Has anyone else tried this? Im going to attempt it soon - what the hell right? :D

This kind of makes sense since 16-20Kohm makes the PCM think the incoming air is 0-15degrees F! If its that cold its possible the coolant will be 165-170 or so as well right? :D

Newsflash: Don't exceed 20K on the resistor or the A/C won't work.

Update: I ordered (10) 18KOhm Resistors since radiosnack doesn't carry any that are the right resistance. If it works I'll be happy to send anyone who needs one a resistor for a buck so that your 2001/2002s can run 160s if you feel like it :D

If it doesnt work, well I'm out of lunch money for a day I guess :D And the 180 will just be something I'll live with.

Update: I recieved the resistors, reinstalled my 160 stat, and changed my coolant back to 50/50. Reprogrammed the PCM for 160statness and everything so far is working fine. The 18K resistor is in the IAT, wish me luck :D

Last night was great, 160 stat kept it running nice and cold around town... power was immense. I could easily bark the 1-2 and it was nice :D I sure hope this mod works

Great news! Hope it continues to work. If you get a chance, would you post a pic of how you have it wired?

Sure. Also if it works I would like to let everyone know I only bought 10 of these resistors but ended up getting 150 (OOPS?!)

They shipped straight from Taiwan. If you'd like some I'll send you 5 in an envelope for a buck (same price as radiosnack). I hope this works, itll help all of us here :D
