With the engine running at idle, measure the voltage at the pos and neg battery posts with a Volt/Ohm meter. Proper voltage should be from 13.5 to 14.5 volts.

If your voltage is proper then you have an indication problem (faulty gauge)

If your voltage is not correct it could be:
    - bad grounds,
    - faulty battery cables,
    - bad field wire to alternator,
    - alternator failure (worn brushes or failed regulator, diode trio, bridge rectifier....etc.)

Chances are if you just replace the alternator you will fix your problem. But there is the risk that it is one of the other items listed above.

      - bad field wire to alternator

I had that problem. Loose connection from alternator to battery can do that. Check all of your connections.

I'm on my third alternator in my '99. That's likely the problem.

          You either:
          - drive a hell of a lot o' miles
          or
          - you buy cheap alternators
          or
          - you seriously overload you electrical system

My 99 still has it's original alternator, but I rebuilt it myself:naughty:

AC Delco isn't cheap. However, the first one went out when I went to the drag strip, and the second one went about 3-4 months later when I was screwing around with my buddy on the interstate. Third one is still running strong. Could have just been a dud.
