some hissing is normal from the system as you change the vent controls. i would get a hand vacuum pump and apply a vacuum to the cansister and the dash controls as a unit to see if it holds vacuum. if it doesnt, apply vacuum to just the dash. if it still doesnt hold vacuum, try each of the dash settings for the vents and see if you can isolate to a particular setting.
finding a leak with a vacuum pump is going to be easier since the car will quite a bit quieter w/o the engine running.

Die Ford v8:
I will take pictures for you showing my temporary fix...
your talking about at the passanger side of the engine bay, near the PCM.. one vacuum line that connects to a T-like fitting to two other lines right?
i had that problem also.. that damn tfitting thing always broke. Today im going over to the local home depot or lowes and looking a t-fitting that will just take its place.
but for now, so i can use my ac, i just connected the main vacuum line over there, to the vaccuum line going tot he ac. to seal it i just used electrical tape. Been a week no problems.
edit: woops. i misread your question.
Take out your HVAC controller.. underneat the ac knob.. there is a rubber maze like piece that distributes the vacuum depending on where you want the air to be blown. its held down by a spring like thing.. what I did is bent the spring so that it wont leak vaccuum pressure. and also slightly regreased it. yea the knob is harder to turn now.. but well worth it.
also.. turn on the ac, take out the HVAC controller, and suck on the RED vaccuum line..(thats the line for the ac Vents in the dash) if you keep sucking and holding that vaccuum, it should blow out the vents.. if it doesnt. you got something wrong with that vaccuum line.. which sucks, because then you have to rip apart the dashboard and trace it..

If you know any body who has a smoke machine, see if you can borrow it from them. then disconnect the vacuum line going to the brake booster and feed some smoke into the line. if you have a vacuum leak, you will see the smoke coming from the leak. if you start to see smoke coming out of the air box and nowhere else, stop. that means your vacuum lines are good. I would then get a vacuum line routing diagram and start checking the lines going into the car for the hvac system. Also listen to the guys with the switch procedure.1999 Pontiac Trans Am M6 Far from stock.....

From: IDIOT OF THE YEAR....1st Place
Remember when I said that little canister broke twice? Well I started my car and was going to gook it up differently incase I just put the wrong hoses on the wrong fittings. I heard a hissing noise and it was from the canister. It freaken cracked like a week after I got it, in September, but it wasn't in pieces so I didn't think that was the problem. Yeah so the little thing cracked. THATS THE THIRD TIME! I took my reciept back to Chevy and said that this was stupid, buy an part and it breaks for no reason. He gave me another one and warranteed that one for another year and everything works fine. Finally it is fixed. Note to self: do not overlook the simplest things. Once I put new point in my old 67 Ford but it wouldn't start. A mechanic told me everything to troubleshoot and fix and I did it exactly like he said. The thing I overlooked was the little wire that went to the points. It was upsidedown and grounding out. He was like, " Oh here is the problem" and fixed my truck in 5 seconds. Smacking myself on the forehead. Thanks guys for the ideas96 Camaro 3.8 A4 Basemodel: 8 mm wires, Shift Kit, Hollowed
Cat(o2 sims), RKSport exhaust, IAT 5.6K resistor, Home Depot CAI
>>>15.375 @ 89.27<<<NEW BEST TIME http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/552491
