  • Bad Engine Problem (rpm limiter at 3500) Help Please!

Okay im going to try and explain this from last night all the way until tonight to see if anyone can truely help me. Last night i felt like doing a fluid check. I got to my coolant overflow and i checked it and when i pulled the dipstick out it was like covered in crap... so i pulled my battery out pulled out the canister and cleaned it out real good. Spent like an hour cleaning out the coolant canister and hooked the battery back up. Well i didnt drive my car from then on that night got up this morning went to school (car ran like a charm) came back home from school same thing... then i wanted to head to walmart and i got on I95 and started doing about 80 mph in fifth and this v6 charger flew by me and i felt like having a little fun so i didnt downshift just put the pedal to the floor.... and nothing the car wouldnt move it sat at 80. I was like okay so i downshifted to fourth... car went up to like 83-85 until it reached like 3500 rpms then it wouldnt do anything. So i pulled over immediately and did a walk around check saw nothing wrong with the car turned it on and got back on 95 but the car was completely different by now and felt like i was towing a 2 ton boat. No matter how hard i pushed on the accelerator it slowly reached up to 3500 rpms and would make a horrible clanking sound until i shifted. So i turned around and went back home. The whole time i was trying to see what the car was doing everytime i stepped on the gas the car felt like it was dying but the rpms where fine they still wouldnt go over 3500.

I went to visit my stepdads brother (ASE cert tech) told me couldnt find anything wrong from just looking and that he needed to run a diagnostic on it and couldnt till he was off. He said that maybe because i had the battery unhooked for a bit that it could of thrown the computer off and he said it will take a bit of driving to get it back into its normal mode. I drove about 30 miles with the car like that and i dont see how it could be computer affecting when my engine sounds like someones taking a jackhammer to it when it tries to go over 3500 rpms in each gear! If anyone has had this happen to their 3.8 please let me know what was wrong, or if a tech knows, have a feeling ill be calling gm for a new crate motor!

O yeah and when i got home from 95 i put it in neutral and revved it and my engine sounded like a bird was hiding inside it (sounded just like a chirp in each rev). First time or two i started it it smoked right underneath the power steering fluid box. When i got to my stepdads brother the chirp was gone and no more smoke, but car still did its stupid stuff (of course he wouldnt drive the car said he was busy).

if it was the batter then all you would have to do is unhook it again for a few minutes so that the computer resets itself, but I don't think thats your problem. Good luck finding a fix

Unhook your battery again, try that... But I think I know the exact sound you're talking about. Get it hooked up to a computer that can read the misfire history, because it sounds like when my car had a misfire. It was the 3 and 6 cylinder coil. If you have catback exhaust, it's a lot louder than with stock exhaust, but you'll still hear it. Most likely the coils. Get it hooked up to a computer, get the codes, get the coils checked, and get back with us about it.

Thanks for the info Disruptore4. Something was sitting in the back of my head thinking that it could be a misfire and i did notice a weird sound in my exhaust i have a cat back flowmaster 40 series and it did sound a bit different than usual. I will have it diagnostic tested sunday and ill get back to ya! Thanks again! And i noticed when i was looking at the car that the owner before must of had a junkyard coil pack placed on it because it didnt match my other two and had some yellow writing on it.

it takes 3 driving cycles for the cars computer to re learn your driving habits IIRC

its 40-50 miles to relearn fuel curves...... car does not learn your habbits....

Hmmm... well I had a 99 camaro M5 way back but I remember my car did somthing like that. It was the CAT. Look under the car after taking it for a spin and see if the cat looks like it could cook the sun... GL

Forgot to mention; it did cause missfires, and it caused other things to have to be replaced (dont remember what it was). So even if you get missfire codes I would still check and see.

Well took my car to the auto lab today... my teacher couldnt figure out anything with the cat and he didnt feel like cutting anything (all welded) and the y-pipe nuts were frozen we didnt want to ring them. So he hooked the computer up and got nothing and he didnt believe me how bad i told him the car was acting. So... we took it for a spin. And lets just say by the time he got back he was scratching his head. We looked at everything every plug all the packs and icm. So finally 5 minutes for schoo let out my teacher was like well lets check the fuel pressure... sure enough the fuel pressure with the car idling is at 10 where i believe running its supposed to sit about 40-50 and moving 50-56. Now we know it has something to do with the fuel system im pretty sure if anything thats what it is now i just have to narrow it down between injectors, the fuel pump (really dont think it is because when you turen the key to the on switch you can hear it pumping fuel and i would think it would just stop working and not pump fuel.) and the only other thing i can think is the regulator. changed the fuel filter about 5 months ago.

                  pump or regulator

should be about 43 psi at idle and cruise

Timing was fine and the computer wasn't throwing out any codes no watter what i did. Anyone know the ways to go about telling if its regulator or the pump? im sure replacing regulator is much more easier and cheaper than the pump. also up near the rails i smell a rich burnt gas smell like maybe one of my injectors are leaking but i mean how would the psi drop so low when just an injector is leaking.

I just have no clue going about replacing the regulator haynes manually doesnt even tell you where its at...

well at least you have a better understanding of the problem. Search for regulator, Ive seen all kinds of threads where ppl have had problems with them. Maybe you will see posted psi from other ppl and if it matches your problems it would give you a place to start!

Ive seen a couple of threads mentioning where they were. Good luck!

take the vac line off the reg.... if you get gas its bad

just beacuse the pump turn does not mean its pumping fuel

Pretty sure the problem has been figured out... from clogged exhaust to the coil packs to the icm was what the problem was thought to be. Wound up to be faulty fuel pump (slowly going bad i guess). Just got my acdelco pump in the mail and ill set it in tomorrow. Crossing my fingers and hoping this is the problem.

Had a tech hook a 7 grand computer to my car and it allows you to go into anything computer operated and he saw that the pump was getting voltage but wasnt outputting like it should of been.

Will post tomorrow if this fixes everything, for future reference.

                            Thanks for the help all!

Well... unfortunatly the new fuel pump didnt fix the problem and i still have no clue whats wrong. =(. Still doing the same thing it was before.
