Re: Great read for you oil freaks
I glanced through it... looks like all the other research done thus far.
And yes.. synth is all about MARKETING.
With oil it comes down to can it lubricate, does it break down and what is it's viscosity properties.
Mobile Clean 5w30 has similar properties that Mobile 1 Synth 5w30 has. Difference.... Price for one that is man made vs dino.
I have never seen an issue with running M Clean 5w30 and a good filter. MY OPINION is that the filter means more than the oil. Changing patterns also make a difference. Normal driving i can see changing 5K miles... if your harder (heavy right foot!) you should do it sooner. your literally cooking the oil with higher RPMs. Causing breakdown in the oil, then it can't do it's job of lubricating properly.
We can debate this on and on... :)FirebirdV6.com/CamaroV6.com Administrator

Re: Great read for you oil freaks
The statement made about the Mobile 1 10W30 regarding ability to flow better when cold, and maintain viscosity when hot is not a revelation. This is a typical characteristic of synthetics, and a big reason why I use it. I want to maintain using the recommended 10W30 throughout the winter, and not have to change to 5W30, and the ability of a synthetic to flow in the cold allows me to keep the 10W30 in the engine during those cold Canadian winters.
Speaking of which, I found frozen rain drops on my car this morning when I went to work!:omg: Looks like that the end of summer:(

Re: Great read for you oil freaks
Most engine wear occurs at start up especially in colder temp. The oils ability to stick to parts when its sitting and its flow rates in colder temps will reduce engine wear. Try starting a car around 0 degrees with reg 10w30 and say royal purple 10w30. All my cars start easier with a synthetic in the winter. The additive package is mainly what determines how long an oil should last under normal operating conditions. This is the main reason why the oil companies tell you not to use race oil in a street car. Race oils don't have the additives which allow them to go 3000-7500 miles. Also race oils contain more zinc which helps with wear, however, zinc attaches emissions equipment like your o2 sensors. The same additives used in a synthetic could be used in a conventional oil. Most people don't know that synthetics actually come from crude oil. Reg dino oil contains molecules of different sizes, some bigger than others. The oil companies actually change the molecules and make them more uniform in size for the synthetics which is why they lubicate better and flow better in colder temps.69 Camaro 350 4spd, Full Hotchkis susp, Baer brakes, moser 12 bolt, Flowmaster

96 RS Hotchkis STB, subframe connectors, Hotchkis LCA and adj Panhard rod, SS camaro sway bars, Bilstein shocks, powerslot rotors, Borla exhaust, rksport headers, k@nFIPK

Re: Great read for you oil freaks
Eh? Flow is considered "viscosity" and I'm going to say a 10w30 is going to have similar, if not the same viscosity as 10w30.
Now if you want to talk about those additives trying to attach themselves to metal (bonding if you would) to save parts on cold starts.. ok. But in my experience, with a good motor and properly change fluid/filter I've never had an issue with starting. Not in anything. I choice to spend my money on good filters to remove the impurities vs. money on fluid that will still get the impurities and a chessy filter.FirebirdV6.com/CamaroV6.com Administrator

Re: Great read for you oil freaks
All of those oils tested are junk anyway.
And as for "synthetic", there's the problem. Although they are allowed to used the term, most "synthetic" oils are not "made-made" - they are blends.
I now use AMSOIL (at $8 a quart) and there is a DIFFERERENCE! This is a TRUE synthetic oil. I had used Castrol Syntec for years, and noticed a positive difference right away. The engine runs cooler.
What is more important is the filter. A good filter like Mobil 1 [I use the M1-201 (PF52)], changed often, is better than changing the oil.Last edited by FirebirdGT; 09-16-2007, 05:00 PM.Robert - owner www.FirebirdV6.com/CamaroV6.com

Originally posted by Andy HI have always used castrol syntec 10w30 in my camaro. I bought my car brand new in 2000. My car has 97,000 miles on it now. Also I use acdelco pf47 oil filter. Thanks:D
I like the AMSOIL. This is the first change with it. I will change it at 3 months (about 3000 miles for me). I also did the flush, and will do it again for the second oil change. My hope is to change the FILTER each month, and the oil each 6 months. Changing the filter maximizes the filtering efficiency.Robert - owner www.FirebirdV6.com/CamaroV6.com

So how did you do the flush? Their website says replace the filter and add the flush and run the engine. I couldn't see buying a new filter to use once for 15 to 20 minutes.
