some info about the problem. the car ('98 camaro V6) misfires, it sounds like it only does it at idle, but i can't be positive. the trip i took just a few minutes ago only made things worse. i added about 1/4 can of seafoam to the gas tank and then ran the car hard. there seems to be a power loss. i made a full throttle start and didn't even spin the tires. i pulled over a mile before home and it was obvious the car was running worse then ever. i got back and listened to the exhaust. i could hear the familiar poofing sound happening a couple times every 4-5 seconds. i revved the engine a few times and let it run for another minute. i checked back again and the poofing was almost constant, about once per second. still no SES light though. anyway here goes...

i've had this car for about a month and half now. i've had it looked at three times by two different dealerships with really no luck. i took the car on a thorough test drive, about 220 miles. after about 40 miles, i got an ses light. everything appeared to be normal and the car drove fine. i even got 27-28 mpg on the whole trip. i get back to the dealership and let them know about the ses light, never giving much thought too it. i get everything set up at the bank, and the day i go there to buy the car, i find out what it is. a random misfire. i was not happy, but the guy said it was just a couple old spark plugs, and they were replaced. so i make the huge mistake of signing the papers for the car, and then the piece of crap is mine. i had to work that same night and it was cold, so i started the car 10 minutes before i had to leave. i get out there and the nice little ses light is back on. i check in back and i can hear an audible misfire coming from the exhaust. about a week later i run the car back down to the original dealership (Ford) and they look at it, say it's probably a coil or injector, and tell me to take it to a GM shop. so i take it to the local chevy place. they tell me the same thing and add some techron to it, tell me to run the car and see if it gets better. i do just that and the misfire still persists. a few days later i take it back and i assume they seafoamed it. runs better for a few days, then the same problem. so i bring it up there again and they put more techron in, saying the injectors are a little sticky yet, but to run the car more. that brings me to now. i've run the car for probably 150 miles since then and had no problems until today. i stopped at wallyworld to buy a model (something to do during break). i put the car in park and notice it's vibrating a little, running kind of rough. so i went and back and checked the exhaust, sure enough it's missing. 30 miles later when i'm back home, i get out and check again. still missing. so i revved the thing 6 or 7 times. i went into the garage and opened up the door, talked to my mom a minute or so, then checked for the mis. i listened for almost a minute and i didn't hear it. it just pisses me off. the first time i test drove the car, i loved it. the way it rode, how it looked, even how the thing smelled. now, it just pisses me and i hate to even go in it. i always get the feeling something will go wrong (just replaced a wheel bearing). so i'm thinking i'll list the car in the local trading post, maybe i'll get an offer. i'd still have my good old buick waiting for me, always ran like a champ.

i just got off the phone with the previous owner. here's what i've found out:

The woman who owned it before owned a fullsize dodge ram and did not like the poor gas milage. she found the camaro and liked the car because of it's looks and good gas milage. it was a private trade between two women. when the last owner (Deb) test drove the car, she said it was misfiring a little bit. so the original owner (cassy) took it into the shop. they replaced the spark plugs, and it turned out that a sensor needed to be reset. she bought the car and it ran fine. she only owned the car for 5 months. she told me her family hated it because it was so small, so they traded it off for a new Jeep Liberty. while Deb had the car the only thing she did was flush the raditor. Deb said the shop who did the cleaning said the engine was in good condition. she told me the previous owner's name, Cassy, and i am in the process of getting a hold of her. i asked Deb if it was the O2 sensor, but she said she couldn't remember.

so, what kind of sensor would cause something like this?

SOOO sorry to hear your frustration.
Did you replace the coils yet?
$60 for all 3 [just get the regular ones, not the high perf ones from o'reillys or autozone].

It sounds like only 2-3 things have really been done here so far:
    replaced plugs
    injector cleaner
    seafoamed it
[BTW you should probably change out the oil after the last two steps may have contaminated it a little]

I would suspect the plug wires, then the coils, then the ICM. Then maybe a bad computer.

In the long run, the problems you are having can get solved with enough time and money. Realize that you will get soaked financially if you try to flip this car and sell it immediately after having just financed it. I would consider what the payoff amount is [for the loan] vs. what you paid for it. Consider the difference in those numbers with the cost of repairs. Then decide whether to sell.

the next time the ses light comes on take it to autozone and have them pull the codes. the misfire could be from the icm or coil packs. id replace those first. check fuel pressure also. you could have a clogged fuel filter or at the worst a burnt up fuel pump. the only other possibility i can think of is the cat being clogged from the seafoaming or the egr going bad.

dont give up on it yet. you'll hate yourself for giving up a nice car just becuase something happens. hell if that were the case i would have given up on my lt1 a year ago. it took me 2300 bucks to get my problems worked out but it was worth every penny.

      cliff notes:
      get it scanned
replace coil packs and make sure plugs are gapped right
      have the icm tested
change the fuel filter and check fuel pressure
      try a new cat converter

im sure its nothing to bad that cant be easily fixed.

it's strange because before when it was missing, i always got a SES light. but yesterday, when it was worse ever before, i never got the light at all. i just called the shop and i'll have the plugs and wires changed on tuesday. to me it seems logical that it might be something besides dirty injectors now. after all, i've added a couple bottles of cleaner, and a bottle of heet, and the other shop added techron...twice. but it definately got worse after i revved it and after i ran the car.

another question. how hard is it to change the plugs and wires? when i called the shop they said the would need it all day and that it would be difficult to do. maybe they're thinking of the LT1?

i check all the plugs but one, i couldn't get it off. they looked good, but the 6th one was slightly crust in one spot. how can i tell if a coil is bad? i'd look but i can't find an l-shaped socket wrench.

With a 1/4" drive I was able to get the first two coils on my car. To get them all easily you probably have to take off the cowling that is in the way. Do a search here or check your service manual for that one-- it probably isn't that hard, but I haven't done it myself.

The actual size of the bolts are half-millimeter sizes like 7.5 but you can cheat and do it with a regular metric socket if you are careful [don't force anything].

replace the in line fuel filter I had this problem before as we use that special formula gas here in the winter, it attracts water. The loss of power is your clue.
