• I swear my Automatic Shifts 4 times

so mine is 99, 4 speed automatic. With 4 speed.. as you start driving, its suppose to change gear a total of 3 times to go up to the max gear.. right. Like this... from stop, you start driving. Gear changes ONE time to shift from 1st to 2nd. Then changes SECOND time to shift from 2nd to 3rd. And finally THIRD time to shift from 3rd to 4th.

BUT... mine changes gear a total of 4 times.. yeas FOUR. One thing I also noticed.. when it makes the last change.. the rpm comes half way down comparing to other 3 previous changes.

so whats going on? And no I am not crazy and yes I did pass my math in highschool

on a different topic (and not to waste posting) what the max width of tire i can put on a factory rim. like.. will 275/40/16 fit on a factory rim.. whats the max i can go.

    Thanks and happy new year.

hmmm.. if the torque converter is locking up shouldnt it give problem or something.. its runs smooth.. no shaking.. no loss of power.. no codes.. nothing.

Torque converter lockup is normal operation. It lowers your engine rpm on the highway and saves gas.

Isn't that an effect of overdrive? Using the engine to reduce RPM, rather than downshifting? Or am I just stupid?

the torque converter will lock up when the momentum on the output side becomes greater then the momentum on the input side, i don't know how to best explain it but you can look it up on wwww.howstuffworks.com its pretty helpful if your going to think swapping converters theres alot other cool car things on there too

its a 5 speed of you count overdrive as a gear otherwise it is a 4 speed

Just to set the record straight, GM powertrain [our transmission supplier] did have a 5 speed automatic for rear wheel drive applications, but it was NEVER used on our cars. They made them for BMW. I don't think the torque rating was high enough for us, not to mention it was more expensive to make.

it is not the overdrive, overdrive = gear # 4, what you feel is the torque converter

try going down a straight pedal to the floor the whole way, it won't shift four times because the torque converter won't lock up, the momentum will never be higher on the output side of the converter like it would during daily driving
