  • Problem starting, Possibly ICM???

Well, the car seems to randomly have issues starting. No constancy to it (whether just driven and restart while warm or totally cooled, or rain or shine). So it did it again today...And my luck turned out to be it was raining sporadically, but mainly when I was outside of my car trying to figure if I could fix it...

Anyway...It'll sometimes give a fire or two then only the starter will turn, no fire from the engine. Sometimes it wouldn't fire at all, just the starter turning over. So today, finally after much aggravation and calling AAA b/c it wouldn't start, my dad just aggressively tapped on the coil packs and then said "Aww try it one more time just for the heck of it" and the car fired right up. I got home, turned it off and restarted it 3-4 times and it fired up fine.

Once the vehicle does fire up, it runs just fine. I can dog it or baby it and it runs good. It's just that initial starting that seems to be fizzling...I haven't tested the coil packs yet so see if it's them. But if it was one of the packs, wouldn't the car continue to run rough even once it fired up?
So any advice on where to get a new ignition so i can start lookin would be helpful. I already looked at Summit and they have a OEM replacement one for like $250.

    Thx for any tips

I have a couple ICM's for sale if you're interested. I could throw coils in too. If it's cranking, it could be the PCM, or a fuel issue too.

        Crap...i never said what kind of car i have...my bad. It's a 1997 3.8

Bird_of_prey, what type of ICM and coils? As far as coils I read some stuff on here a few days ago that the best ones are pretty much stock (cept for the MSD ones). I think I'm just going to get the ICM replacement from NAPA, that one was only $152.

As far as the MSD coils go, are they a $150 worth spending? (saw em for $50 apiece)

I have a set of 97 coils and a 97 ICM. I could do $100 shipped for the coils and the ICM. It's a helluva deal when you think about it. Replacement coils are about $30 a piece. There really is no need for the MSD stuff in your application.

So i'm guessing the only application the MSD coils would be really benefited from is FI right?

Bird, are those new or used Coils and ICM?

Thx man, but i think i'm gonna just replace the ICM with one from NAPA, but if that turns out to not be the problem I'll prolly give ya a shout for the coils.

It hasn't had trouble starting recently, and it also hasn't stopped raining for the past 2 days....literally.....
