a few months i purchased my '99 Firebird from a small used car dealer. the car has nearly 100k miles on it. now me being a teenager, 19, i run it kinda hard. the car is almost completely stock, it does have the Y87 package, a K&N filter, and what appears to be a high-flo cat. as far as maintenance goes, i have gotten the fuel injection system cleaned and the transmission flushed, both done at jiffy lube. ( I kno i could have done it myself for cheaper, but i didn't have alot of time, at the time, and i had some extra cash) i plan on switching to synthetic oil, replacing the spark plugs and wires, fuel filter, and cleaning the air filter. I also plan on getting a whisper lid, and a pcm tuned for use with 93 octane. recently my ses light came on, and apparently there was a misfire in clyinder 5. i'm hoping plugs and wires will fix that. any thoughts on other parts or maintenance work i should do to keep my baby running strong? your thoughts and suggestions are greatly appreciated!

running 93 in your car will be a waste of money.

If there was a misfire it could be the coil is bad, so I would check that.

he said hes going to have it tuned for it, but its still a waist cause of the compression.

I had a misfire, replaced plugs/wires, misfire went away, then came back. I'm looking at the coils, now :P

For future reference, I wouldn't have flushed the trans at 100k miles. Remember that. Check the fluid, if it's still pink and doesn't smell burned, you don't need to change it.

Also, no need to switch to synthetic oil. Any 5w30 will work just fine. If you switch to synth now, you will just find a bunch of oil leaks.

Plugs and wires are going to be a *****. You will curse those log style exhaust manifolds. That should clear up your miss. People that say coil, are confused. You would be missing on the corresponding cylinder as well.

Lid and filter are a good idea. Just remember that your K&N doesn't always have to be perfectly clean, and don't over oil it.

Fuel filter is pretty easy to do. It helps if you keep your mouth closed while disconnecting it.

I think that about covers it. Welcome to ownership!

all the tune is going to do is advance the ign timing since high octane gas burns slower

if i switch to synthetic will it really leak? also why do say 5w30? i thought it was 10w30? i want a good oil to take care of my older motor.

I use 5-30 also, my car runs better on it. It's all about personal preference. Plugs and wires should fix the misfire, if not, then ICM. Maybe you should also think about getting your rear diff serviced also

i wouldnt use 5w-30, more like 10w-30 or thicker since ur motor is 100k mile mark, you want a thicker velocity oil to condition the motor better

I have 99 thousand miles on my engine and I run synthetic and I do not have any leaks.

If you run Mobil 1 in the engine, tranny and rear end you will see more hp to the ground. Not to mention great protection and increased fuel economy.

you increase the probability of leaking. search on google for thousands of opinions on that one.

run whatever weight motor oil is recommended for your car. If the manual says 10w then run 10w.

If you have a leak it is going to leak no matter what kind of oil you put in it, but if you dont have a leak it won't leak.
