  • Ignition key cylinder binding?

my key wont turn all the way back with out a a little extra effort, and i can kinda feel a popping in it when i force it back. i was thinking the cylinder was bad but when it goes bad it will illuminate the security light.

this ever happen to anyone else?

I would try to spray a little bit of WD-40 on it. That should free it up.

The "Security" light should come on everytime when you attempt to start the car...

my dad always has trouble getting my key out... you have to turn it forward a little and then push the button and turn back and then pull it out

right and so does the ses light and the check gages and all the other ones.

it isn't like the cylinder is stuck, more like something is stuck on it. it takes very little effort to "pop" it to the off position. it is like a screw is loose inside or something.apparently i should have said the security light doesn't stay on after the initial starting of the car.

It shouldnt stay on at all no matter what unless the car wont start at all because of VATS, I dont think it would come on anyways if the car is started, my cars key cylinder does the same thing and need new one. security light wouldnt come on unless the key doesnt read right when u attempt to start the car as it would stay on and wont allow you to start the car.

there are two wires that run off your cylinder one of them goes into a module that reads the resistance of the chip in your key. more commonly what happens when your security light stays on is the wire is broken. the two wires really arent connected very well and break quite often, i probaly sell two of these a week. the problem doesnt have anything to do with the sercurity light. there are no lights on. just kind of a binding, probally just those wires binding on something about to break.

asked a couple of techs and one of them said he has seen it before where the tumblers in the cylinder have worked loose after years of use and are binding. this sounds like it is what i am exprincing.

                    Re: Ignition key cylinder binding?

so it definatly was the ign cylinder changed it and now i got a caddy crest on my key. tech also told me he thought the failure was due to the bracket on the shifter being out of alignment, i searched the gm database and there is a technical service bulletin that says if you expirence your ignition binding in cold weather then you should replace your shifter to be corrected with a diffrent designed shifter bracket. anyone ever heard of that?
