Will this work for our cars? it says it will work for any car, but i thought the only choice was the dis-4. and if it will work for our cars does it do basically the same thing as the dis-4?

the MSD 6 series can't be used with a distributorless ignition system.

yeah, i tried to look for the answer before i posted but i couldn't find it anywhere. It was in the '93-'02 V6 section at thunder racing, and the description gave the impression that it works with all cars. But then after i downloaded the installation instructions one of the first things it said was "this item does NOT work in distributorless systems"....... sorry guys, i don't mean to clutter the forum, i was placing an order tonight and wanted to know if i should include this.

FYI, if you have a 3.8, you really don't need any sort of iginition upgrades. Just make sure to use good plugs and wires.

No stock motor "needs" its iginition modified, you will however see gains, some very small. As you add other mods, iginition systems become more important. You should start with good wires and plugs. If running a larger then stock cam, nitrous or forced induction, you then should think about coils or an amplifier box (MSD).

If running both nitrous and forced induction, I would have both a box and coils and ofcourse good wires and plugs.

Coils or a Amplifier box on a bone stock or slightly modified motor will most likely only give you slightly better fuel mileage, or faster starting. You wouldn't see a gain on your ET slip or even feel it driving.

Adding coils or a box with junk wires and /or plugs can and will cause a miss because your spark now has enough energy to jump to ground through the wire. You also would see a "fireworks" show when you open the hood at night.

The order you should follow on iginition mods would be,

Plugs
wires
coils
box

Plugs and wires should be done before ANY other mods. The box is after coils simply because of price.


GM's waste spark system is good, but the aftermarket parts do make it even better.

stick with GM coils and upgrade your plugs and wires. The stock coil packs are better than aftermarket. The boxes are not needed either even if you are FI. Most of the big FI guys here run GM coil packs and no MSD boxes.

2 tenths is allot to pick up on a NA car for something you say "isn't needed".

the mod enc. is outdated, a lot of things have improved since it was made, including tuning for our cars. ;)

We are trying to get the info all updated though just is a slow process rewriting everything.

But yea unless you are running deeper than low 12s, ignition box is not needed

Tunning is is far more expensive (lap top, wideband, HPtuners) and much more to learn then adding an ignition box. It's still 2 tenths. How much do you pickup on a close to stock car from tunning?

2 tenths from the box is just what one person has seen, not everyone sees gains or anything at all. Just change in weather or track conditions could of caused the 2 tenths

with tuning you can do so much more, you can see a garuanteed 2 tenths+ at the track on a stock car as well as better gas mileage and such also. Most people have laptops already and wideband helps but is not a necessity with hptuners or DHP. Widebands do help though tune the car perfectly.

but as for the ignition system, GM did good and gave us something nice for a change. Upgrade the plugs and wires and call it a night

You didn't read the write up, all runs were performed on the same day and the box was bypassed after the 6 passes for the test. 3 more runs were made with out the box and the car dropped back to the slower times. 2.5 -3 MPg is a significant gain as well.

All your ignition system does is ignite the fule in your cylinder. You could shoot a lightning bolt into your cylinder and its not going to make the combustion any more powerful. The reason you use an "upgraded" ignition system is to assure that the cylinder fires on time. If you run nos or a turbo/SC a missfire could blow your motor up so by adding an MSD your not adding power your preventing malfunction.
