what mods void warranty?

about 2 months ago I had my 3.8 replaced by the chevy dealership. the new one has a 100,000 mile warranty. what mods would void this warranty?

p.s. i offered to change my girlfriends oil in her 04' accord and she said that me doing that would void the warranty lol because she thinks you have to go to a shop and pay someone to do it and get a service record or else her warranty would be voided. but its 3 years old with 60k i dont think it even has a warranty?

Read the Magnuson-Moss Warranty act. The aftermarket component must directly cause the failure. Or, you could just exercise common sense. Lid/Filter probably won't void a warranty. Cam, headers, nitrous, probably would.

I was looking at a 05 Mustang GT with factory warranty and I could buy additional 3 years after that through ford. They said if I installed headers it would void warranty but if I had a Ford dealership install Ford headers it would be ok.

any parts that cuases a direct failure of the item under warranty, also on the motor you got if you take anything off of the long block it will void your warranty. meaning if you take off your valve covers to paint them or anything you will void your warranty. the thing with the oil change is true to an extent, if it was questioned you would have to prove the vehicle has been properly and maintained and serviced, so if you just had the receipts where you bought the oil you would be fine.

you know i love how the dealerships try and make you think you need to take it to them. The truth at least with gm is if you b_tch enough they'll repalace the motor . I just bought a new cobalt and it said lifetime powertrain waranty them in fine print it says if you servive it here. I am an ase certified tech why wont you honor my oil changes?i said i probably go over the car more than you do . They had no reply . just an intresting story

never seen anything on a lifetime warranty from gm, but the reason they want you to bring it to them is so if you do have a problem they can blame themselfs and also by chargeing you for a oil change they can recoup their expenses from the problem you have.

yah it's a thing one of the dealerships around here does . It's total bs though cause the powertrain warranty only covers hard mecahnical parts .which almost never fail .

anything internal will definately void the warranty...bolt-ons may, depending on how hard the dealership wants to fight you on that.

well lets say i buy headers...3 weeks later engine blows..not from the headers.

would they not replace it?

lets say they wouldnt replace it cause the headers were on there. how about i take off the headers, and put the stock exhaust manifolds back on, then what?

thats kinda gay about warranty void. my new motor has 100000 mile warranty. now i cant do anything to it?

headers wont void your warranty, but a k and n filter or cold air intake could. has to do with the oil on the filters. if you take anything off of the long block it will void your warranty. you can do what ever you want to the intake and fuel systems and anything, but if you take a vavle cover off: void.

the motor he got should be a 89017861 i sell them all the time for less then $2000, it is a new motor with a 3yr/100k warranty parts and labor.

Ford said Headers would void a warranty so I think he needs to ask and get it in writing if they say its ok.

well i have a k&n filter in my air box.. 3yr/100k sounds about right. the motor totalled 4200 after labor. 27xx.xx for the motor itself plus about 400 or so more in small parts,gaskets,wiresplugs, etc plus 1100 in labor. whitmore chevrolet, west point, va. yeah talk about a dumb move. even though the motor is new and all whooptepoop i coulda had an ls1 put in for that much. my dad is stubborn he is the one that footed the bill and said the warranty was worth more than buying a used ls1 and not being sure if something would be wrong with it or not. plus hes lazy and would not want to go through with the "hassle" of finding all the other things you need to get to make your v6 to a v8 via going to junkyards, ebay etc.

i voided mine out the a$$, so i called the company and told them that i wanted to sell it back to them. they did sell it back to me, i got like 800 buck back. i'm not sure how long was left on the war.

A dealer can not force you to use them for maintenance. They can void your warranty if you can't prove the maintenance was performed. If you do oil changes on your own you need to save the receipts for the filter and oil. Even then the dealer will probably try to screw you so you may have to call a GM rep or lawyer up. Some dealers are great to deal with and will go the extra mile to help you, but others couldn't care less.
