  • Question (non f-body)

When my wife is backing out in her prelude in the morning, a lound whining sound comes from the back passenger side. She says it only happens when the car is cold, what could this be? Thanks

not the foggiest. whining sound could mean a lot of things to a lot of people. are you sure it isn't just the transmission whining in reverse? If I were you I would drive ( or at least ride in) the car in the morning to see what kind of noise it is making. no offense, but women tend to not be the best descriptors when it comes to vehicle noises.

My wife's Saturn does the same thing. Mostly only when braking when it has been cold or wet.

I've heard it, you can hear it big time outside. It comes from near the back tire. It only lasts for a few seconds, but is noticeable.

check the wheel bearings/hub assembly and the brakes.

those are the only things that might possibly make a *whining* noise while the vehicle is in motion in that location.

typically gears whine, brakes and bearings squeel. wherein MY description woul mean that gear noise is a deeper, lower tone, and bearing or brake noise is audibly higher pitched.

The saturn makes almost a grinding noise...but only for the first few seconds of braking...its front wheel drive and has rear drums and only happens on the driver's side rear wheel. I haven't a clue what it is.

so check for bearing play and pull the drums off and inspect the shoes and inside of the drum.
