  • I want to switch to synthetic

i love my car and want to switch to royal purple, it is however a synthetic oil, and i have always run regular oil. My question is whether or not it is too late for me to switch right now. It's a 93 3.4 with 90 thousand miles on it. I don't see any major oil leaks right now, obviously i am not sure whether any new ones will develop if i switch but i figure it's worth a shot. if it did start to leak, could i just switch back to regular oil with no consequence? I really want to run synthetic oil, especially royal purple, any input would help my decision, thanks!

dude my car ran regular oil for...... 8 years? lol.. then I switched to synethetic. its never too late. if your really considered, also buy engine wash ( i dk waht its called) you put it in your oil and run the car for 5 mins, then change oil... its like 5 bux and will be right next to the oil section. also my suggestion, put a K&N oil filter on. it doesnt matter if you dont, but the cleaner the better

thanx, my car always gets the best treatment ... i.e. 40 dollar oil changes by me. and i always get k&N gold class filters, but i'm glad to see someone else agrees. about that engine wash, how does that help ...is it just like seafoam which you poor into your crank case? CUZ i did that like 4 months ago.

oh and btw the car has been running on regular oil for almost fifteen years so.....

Re: I want to switch to synthetic

this has been discussed several times. google your question and you'll see it discussed several thousands of places.

The answer on switching is: it depends. If you have a leak that is currently clogged with sludge, synthetic MAY clean the seals, and MAY cause it to leak. It's a gamble.

Single posts of "I switched" are just people that gambled and won. At 90K, I think you are right on the line where you MAY experience leaks.

When my car had 90K, I ran dino oil and changed it frequently. That would be my recommendation.

Re: I want to switch to synthetic

i went to synthetic at about 50k. what a mistake that was. ever since then i've changed the oil pan gasket 3 times. biggest pita. i went back. i know everyone says not to, but screw it. so for the last 20k i've been on "normal" oil. it's a big gamble. you either are fine or you get the life drained out of you:bs:

Re: I want to switch to synthetic

i just had a brand new engine installed in mine. she had her first oil change yesterday (by me). i used mobil 1 10w-30 fully synthetic with the top of the line k &n oil filter. i drained out the old. put the bolt back in. took off the old oilfilter. put on the new oil filter. filled her back up. runnin great. my only concern is..my oil pressure gauge normally stays at 59 psi which i think is the right amount..but ever since i changed it it looks like its staying at 60 or 61. is this good?bad?normal?doesnt matter?

no its engine flush. it just swishes around in your engine and **** and cleans up gunk and whatnot :P i do it every other oil change or so just because it cant hurt :D

ive got 140k. im debating wether or not, on my next -overdue- oil change, to go to synthetic (its been run on regular its whole life). i know that they have "new" stuff out there that supposedly doesnt cause leaks. but who knows. any advice.

Like stated before kind of a gamble but if nothing leaks then it will be one of the best things for the motor. Just don't switch between dino and synthetic often because when you switch to synthetic your engine basically goes into a break in period.

I have took alot of filters apart, got alot of time at work lol Never took a K/N apart but a Mobil 1 oil filter and its the same as a AC Delco. mobil 1 is thick metal on outside thow so seems you are really getting something. worst filters was pensoil and regular fram. AC Delco is really a good filter.

I have 220,000 miles and had used Castrol "synthetic" Syntec since 36,000. Yes, the oil pan has a leak but it slowed after I switched to a REAL synthetic - AMSOIL 3 months ago. I also use AMSOIL engine flush, and only Mobil 1 filters. It's not cheap - my oil changes cost over $100. But I think it's worth it.
