    Re: Official Car Storage Thread

might as well go from the opposite spectrum now since it's that time of year again.

Me and my bro just brought our 3.4's out of their winter slumber and we always do a number of things when bringing them out of their auto-cacoon.

    -check tire pressure
    -roll car out of garage
-check car for animals, bitten wires etc.
-look at ground where car was stored for any coolant/oil/tranny fluid leaks.
    -change the oil & filter.
-put the battery on charge for half an hour.
    -top off all fluids
-start car, let warm up to operating temps, and scan for trouble codes.

    enjoy!

this time around was not quite so fun for my bro since his battery was dead and wouldn't hold charge. a quick trip to the auto store fixed that.

whenever your bringing your car out of storage make sure to take a good half day off at least. (i skipped school, you know, just to make sure my priorities were taken care of :naughty:)

don't forget to have your buddies over for a bbq and cold beverages!

finally, a good wash and wax is in order. then you can go out cruising with your super hot camaro/firebird.

I just park mine in the garage and drive it on nice days during the winter. I have a beater for an alternate car, though. The Bird only goes out if the roads are totally dry, I don't want any salt getting on it. This winter was snowy though, so I hardly used it. But now things are drying out in northern Illinois, so the Bird is back on the road.

Is there a good way to keep brake rotors from rusting during extended storage periods?

Not to thread dig, but two or three stops from 60 mph and your rotors will be back to new. Unless they are pitted and warped.

I think everyone covered the majors....I suggest a few boxes of baking soda in the cabin and maybe even some DRi-rid. Moisture is a major killer.I stored my winter beater last summer when I pulled my bird out. When I went back in November to pull it out there was mold on the cloth seats because there was moisture in there!!!!It was gross as hell. And yeah...D-con under the hood so mice don't have at the wires!

I'm going to dig this up because where I live storage time is present (yay Canada...)

luckily I have a heated garage to store mine in. I filled it up with 91 octane because I heard it sits better (whether this is true or not I can't go wrong) . I usually just disconnect the battery and leave it in. About once every 2-3 weeks I reconnect the battery and start her up and let it idle to keep the juices flowing. I just ordered an SLP car cover, hopefully that arrives this week.

Haven't had a problem using that method, the heated garage does make a difference.

What about moisture in the interior, any tips on keeping moisture out?

i wouldnt really worry about that in a heated garage, but you can get a box of baking soda to stick in there, or get a box of rice and stick it somewhere, it will absorb the moisture

Not sure about starting it up and then stopping it. I would go for oil change, some gas stabilizer and an engine fogging product myself. If the engine doesn't get hot enough, the moisture from the combustion will leave water vapor, which will react with the vapors, acidify and corode the engine.

As far as the moisture, I have used anhydrous calcium chloride and like it (brand name DampRid).

should I start the car periodically? or use a trickle charger on my battery. Not really sure what's better....

i like to start my cars every so often, but it is also a good idea to use a trickle charger also.

my camaro has been sitting for approx 5 months now (i have put on about 500 miles) and i can already tell the battery is starting to go bad

edit* just make sure that when you start it, it gets up to operating temp for a while.. you dont want to rust your exhaust out from condensation buildup

Getting it up to temp is good, but keep in mind that it's not just the exhaust you have to worry about when running the car for short periods, but also the oil. Water vapor in the engine oil causes the oil to acidify, corroding bearings, cylinder walls and pistons and breaking down the lubricative properties of the oil itself. Also keep in mind that each time an engine is started, it takes a few seconds for the oil to coat each moving part within the engine, so for that brief moment, it's essentially metal on metal (why poeple rev their engines before a car warms up is beyond my comprehension).

I know for many of you the salt on the roads keeps your Camaro's in the garage, but I'd suggest a brief drive once a month to make sure everything (bearings, drivetrain and engine) is well coated with lube provided there's not salt and ice on the roads.

                            Re: Official Car Storage Thread

Unfortunately in Vermont the roads are covered with salt and sand from December to April. I prefer to pull the battery, jack it up and not touch it untill spring. It's only a few months. Going through all the work to take it off the stands and put the battery back in is not worth it. I've never had any trouble come spring time.
