hey guys. i am haveing a problem. when i hit the gas and i am under full power the car sputters and sounds like it is backfireing, with a notisable lost of power. i don't know if it is the trany sliping or my fuel pump going out. my trany's valve body needs replaceing could that be it? ( i hope so because i have a new valve body ready for install :) ) This sputtering and what sounds like backfireing only happens when i am 100%, i have no problem when i am driveing it normal i would say like no higher than 70% power or so. i have a 2000 camaro with the 3.8l <== i need help please. :(

Re: problem with fuel?
1.
Remove the ignition coil(s).
2.
Using an ohmmeter, check the resistance between the primary terminals on the underside of the coil. The resistance should be 0.50-0.90 ohms.
3.
Check the resistance between the secondary terminals. It should be 5000-10,000 ohms.
4.
If the coil failed either test, replace the coil.
how many miles are on the car? could be a bad cat but being its a 2000 i dont think it would be bad yet

Re: problem with fuel?
if your cat is bad you will have like a rotten egg type smell... not always though... when your accelerating it will feel like your bogged down... im nto sure how your cat is on your car but mine was clamped on so we just unbolted mine and it was the culprit... you should be able to get a new cat for around $100 and have a shop weld it on for pretty cheap... i would look into checking if its the cat soon because it will cause more problems... mine backfired and stalled out my car, fouled my plugs, 02 sensors twice, my egr went bad, and some other sensors were shot... ended up being like $700 when it could haev been $200 tops.

Re: problem with fuel?
ya now that i have been reading up on what my symtomes are i think that is what it is. it does bog down when under heavey acceration. but not when under light acceration and when under heavy acceration is when it sounds like it is back fireing. i found a high flow cat for like 70 bucks and it is slip on so all i have to do is just cut off the one that is on there and bolt it down. i figure sence i have to repair i might as well up grade. i do have a stock system and what is the size of the pipeing? 2 1/4 or 2 1/2? just so i get he right one. thanks for all the help i like finding out new things

Re: problem with fuel?
hey guys,
well i did a firther search into my problem with sputering and backfireing at high rpm's. i checked all the spark plugs and they all have a tan look to them and i am sure that is what they normally look like ( according to the manual ). the sugestion has come up that it is my cat. if the spark plugs look good does that mean that my igntion and fuel system working and that cat is just pluged up or starting to go bad? i was thinking that if somthing was wrong with the fuel or spark when it is the ocational sputtern it would still show up on the spark plug. my other question is for the stock exhust system what size is the pipeing so i can get a new cat. bacause that is the only thing i have to try next. thanks guys
