  • What's that smell?

When I floor it while driving and rev the engine to about 5k, shortly after, I get a weird smell in the cab. Smells kinda like exhaust and transmission fluid, more or less. What is this? Anyone else experience this as well?

Okay, to all of these replies so far:
kristen: This can be with the windows open or closed. Doesn't matter. I don't run my heater unless it's cold, which it's starting to get there. I don't have AC, seeing as the clutch on the compressor blew out. No smoke anywhere.

              zlexiss: Thanks! :D

              Black98FiveSpeed: It's an automatic.

Meatyshells: perhaps, but I swear I smell transmission fluid. I had to crawl up under the car to tighten down the nut on the starter solenoid and I looked at the transmission pan. It was all greasy looking from the fluid. :P Guess it's time to put in that filter and gasket. Could I be burning tranny fluid? I went to check my fluid and I was a little low, but I noticed that it was a little blackish looking.

im guessing something in your trasmission is getting roasted.
Low tranny fluid + black isnt very good.
                does the fluid smell burnt?

                  Re: What's that smell?

trans fluid smell or burnt engine oil smell? Usually people have rear main seal leaks and it leaks onto the ypipe and burns. makes a nice burnt oil smell. :)

                      Re: What's that smell?

wouldn't cause smoke if it was just some drops on the ypipe, mine drops a little and at stop lights I can smell the burnt oil

Yeah no smoke, though I am roasting oil on the block. I have a gasket leak, though I'm not sure exactly where. Valve cover gasket? Still no smoke, though. What does burnt tranny fluid smell like?

well, it smells burnt.. smell the new stuff before you drop the pan, then smell the stuff in the pan... you'll know pretty quick if its normal or not.

and if your fluid is gettin a little black, it is definitely time to change that trans screen and fluid.

sounds like the smell is a combination of you burning off oil on the exhaust, and a leak from somewhere too (possibly trans pan gasket/loose bolts?)

I was up under the car today. I am leaking both oil and tranny fluid from both gaskets. >_<
