  • To fix or not to fix

on the rear left and right sides of my car, there's a gap between 1/8 and 1/4 inch wide between the bumper and the fenders. the very back of the bumper meets perfectly with the rest of the body though. the gaps are about 4 inches long. i tried pushing up on them hoping they would "pop" back in, but no luck. they're really not that noticeable, so i'm wondering if i should bother with it? i pointed it out in this picture:

it's the same on the right side.

look under the bumper right behind the wells. If it is like the way the front is mated to the quarters then there is a flange that sticks out on the bumper and a receiving flange on the quarter panel that it mates to. There might be some loose bolts or it could have just been a shoddy body fit and you'll have to take out a spacer or two so you can tighten them up and bring the bumper up some.

Every body part will fit differant. especially on our cars since they are'nt the stiffest contruction in the world and over time they tend to "settle".

I would check that first and like i said...reshim/fit the bumper if you have to. It's not an incredbily hard thing to do.

Let me know how it turns out too...

I'm curious to know if my educated guess was right. (Im not really sure if that is the way the bumper is mounted. I would assume so since otherwise there is no real true vertical adjustment to close that gap and supprt the bumper.)

But yea, definatly let me know if that fixes it.

Hi.. noob at the forum here..

I just recently remove the rear bumper from a 94 camaro to do some body work.

It is held on along those sides by plastic strips that are riveted to the flexable bumper cover. Each side has one strip and each strip has 3 bolts coming out of it that go into the body of the car as well as a single screw. You can find the farthest one forward (the screw) inside the fender lip. the next fastener is a 10mm bolt just around the corner from it inside the wheel well.
Then the final two 10mm bolts are inside the rear comparment (trunk).

I think they sag from time and the weight of the flexable bumper. I dont think the plastic strip moves, I think the soft cover just pulls away from the strip over time.

Good luck. The bumper on my V6 car lines up perfect, but the bumper on my Z28 is sagged a little. Not enough to really notice, though.
