  • Coolant consistantly low, random SES?

    Well, here's the deal:

A bit under a year ago the previous owner had the coolant system flushed because of some clay-like dexcool clogging up the works. A few months later I purchased her, noticed one day the temp climbing pretty quickly and then over the 210 mark which I hadn't seen happen before. I was only about two blocks from home and it was just a hair over 210 so stupidly I babied her home.

Looking under the hood I noticed one of the coolant lines from the radiator was hot as hell and the other ambient. This is when I let it all cool down then looked in the radiator cap and then asked a bit more about the history and found out about the previous sludging. Anyway, there was some thick thick sludge in there agian. Since then I have flushed and changed the coolant a good 4-5 times. Finally I am at a point where it stays a liquid. :)

So all of that leads to the next part. I never get over 210 since that one day, but I notice that every day before I head out in the morning the coolant level in the radiator is down about 4 or 5 inches from the top of the fill neck. Have to pour a good 16oz at least of water into the radiator a day.. not the overflow.

I had a random SES light pop on about a mile from campus the other day but the car felt to be driving normal, unfortunatly after class when I wanted to go get scanned the SES was gone.

Any ideas? At first I figured it was air working out, but this is everyday... and lots of liquid. Then I thought maybe a pinhole leak that is steaming off (also I felt behind waterpump pulley after a long drive, dry as a bone, as is the little plastic L, no puddles ever either anywhere) but it's so much water that's missing everyday. So now I'm running out of ideas and thinking I'm burning it off. So far my oil is still clean, no water. Intake gasket?

Just trying to get some opinions from those in the know. Help?

If you are positive that there are no external leaks than it is likely intake gaskets. They are very common on these engines. You havent noticed any antifreeze type smell in the car have you? Possible heater core leak? It is probably unlikely that is your cause but is something else to check. That is a bit of coolant to lose every day so wherever it is going is a pretty decent amount. I would still lean towards intake gaskets. As far as your SES light going away it will be stored in the pcm memory, so even when the light goes off you can check the code later in the code history.

i would also sheek the freeze plugs because i had a problem simmilar to that and no puddle eather what was happening was as the car got up to running temp the plug would start to seap out and the anti freeze would evaporate before it could reach the ground an as the engine cooled it stoped so i would cheek that

        Thanks for the tips. :)

Ok, so bit of an update. With the car running I checked the dipstick just seeing if the oil was at all milky, it is a nice pure amber color thankfully. I also took off the oil cap while running trying to see if there would be any steam, nothing. But I did notice this:

Still going on I check a spot on the right of the intake manifold in the valley between it and the valve cover. About a week or so ago I noticed water in there, so I took a towel and managed to get it way in there and soak it up. Also noticed some calcium looking deposits in there.

Today I looked at that same spot again and soaked up a bit more water, not a ton.. but it was there and yellowish. Also it hasn't rained since I made sure it was dry, no puddles, nothing.

Here's where it starts to collect:

just to let you know, you can get teh SES code scanned, the light doesnt have to be on to get it.

also, that white stuff on your oil car IS a sign of water in the oil, but if the car was sitting long before you got it, it could have just been from condensation

EXACT same thing happened to me, it was an upper intake gasket. as far as ses light you can get it scanned and if car was normal it coulda been a o2 sensor starting to go bad. good luck

So, given the cream in the oil fill neck, water in the oil... awesome.

How bad are we talking for driving a few miles? I have work tonight, saturday all day, then late sunday and monday.

I can dig into the engine Sunday morning and if needed monday morning as well. I'm sure I can manage to get a ride Sunday but untill then I really do need to drive to work today and tommorow. How bad are we talking for putting on probably 40 miles?

Have the upper and lower intake out of the car, calling it quits for today. Seriously the biggest ***** of a time getting it all out. And the braket for the coils... my god! I think i will mouth them on the firewall not that braket when i'm done.

Worked from midnight untill 1pm today then started on the car... I'll try to finish tommorow.

Oh, as for the gaskets, the uper intake gasket was broken in two, not sure if that's from removal though. Also the frontmost driver side intake runner in the manifolds is a yellow color while all the others are brown. Hmm?

about mounting the coils... im not sure if you can move them because of grounding... i could be wrong though

Figured I might as well try some color. Wanting to do the valve covers but really not sure about the whole 'bang away at the lift bracket' thing...

Getting there... After getting this far I realized I still had that damned little plastic elbow in the pile of parts. Have to take it all back apart again and try one more time. Awesome.. :(

Ok, I forgot to mention that the SES light... got scanned before the teardown and it was some random speedometer related error.

Got it all done, turned it over for about 3 seconds. Sounds just fine. Going to do an oil change again here in a few minutes then just baby it for the next week keeping a close eye open.
