I have a 97 A4 and recently made a 350 mile trip from Dallas to Lubbock texas. I usually get 28-29 mpg on the highway but this time got around 22. My check engine light came on close to the end of my trip so I pulled the code and it came up a p1406 auxillary emissions control. Looked up the code and it seems to be EGR related. My idle is also getting rough now so I'm wondering if replacing the EGR is the best solution at this point. If so, anyone know where I can get one besides the dealer?? Autozone, O'Reilly etc. says they don't carry it. Thanks....

Rough idle and bad gas mileage are both indications of a stuck EGR valve. Could be a fuse, valve could be bad, or some other wiring problem. Check the fuses first, then try replacing the valve. Not sure if a parts store would have it, but GM Parts Direct has it for $110 (12568589).Matt

my egr valve is bad too, but **** it, i cant afford to fix that right now because my car needs other repairs. i dont think anything can be damaged by not fixing it now...right? my gas mileage sucks tho. but yeah, you can clean it, but in some cases the problem comes back after a couple days, people try replacing the solenoid, but in my case the whole valve needs to be replaced. if i remember right my mechanic said it could be related to a intake manifold leak or something? so even that might not be a fix for me...
edit: can i get a link to that gm parts website or something for when i save up the money?1995 3.4l dark green camaro<br />stock...for now

My works..i think.. what would happen if i unpluged it. I dont see why my car would need to reuse exhaust.<a href=\"http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2245261\" target=\"_blank\">http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2245261</a> Green 1997, 105k, all stock except for Z28 front springs, Air shocks in the rear, home made coolant recovery tank, home made battery hold down.

Exhaust gases are introduced into the intake charge to reduce the excessive cylinder pressures that cause detonation. The PCM controls the EGR solenoid to open when the proper conditions require it.Now Playing: \'99 Pewter Firebird, stock, bone stock, and nothing but stock, so help me God!<br />Comming attractions: K&N Filter, Lid Mod, Intake Bellows Smooth Pipe Mod.<br />I dream about: Forced Induction (TC or SC) or NOX (or both!)
