  • Fuel Pump Help?

So, I'm going on the on ramp to I 70 today after leaving school. I drop it into second and try to get up to speed and the engine feels like its missing. It like bogs down, doesnt speed up, shaking from engine . Going through town its fine, but 3,000+ rpm it misses pretty bad. I go home turn it off. Drive it up to 80mph an hour ago and no problems.

So my mechanic does a "fuel pressure" test or something like that. It reads 40lbs at idle. He said its supposed to be a minimum of 48 lbs. He says fuel pump is weak and will be 680 to replace it.

The car now drives fine, idles fine, and revs without any problem. The problem is obviously on and off. So is this definately a fuel pump? Also, is there a place to get a cheaper fuel pump that will work in a 97 3.8? The one from napa is the "whole sending unit" which he claims it HAS to have. And its like 300 dollars. I read the articles about the trap door method, and figured Id save a HUGE amount of money by doing it myself. Does it sound like a fuel pump for sure? Anyone use the trap door method here? And do I need the whole assembly or just a pump?

    it might still be good

    1.

Relieve the fuel system pressure and check that there is an adequate quantity of fuel in the tank.
    2.

Connect a fuel pressure gauge to the pressure connector fitting located on the end of the fuel rail. On 5.7L engines, it is located inline shortly before the fuel rail and accumulator.
    3.

Make sure the ignition switch has been in the OFF position for at least 10 seconds and that all accessories are OFF.
4.Turn the ignition switch ON and the pump will run for about 2 seconds. Note the system pressure with the pump running, it should be between 40-47 psi.

He connected a fuel pressure gauge to the fitting on the fuel rail. 40 psi with the car idling...he said its supposed to be at least 48?

Hmm...wonder where he got 48? Any idea what would cause the car to miss under load above or around 3k rpms? Now it seems to have disappeared...car runs fine. But I'm sure it will be back.

I've done a tune up on the car. MSD wires and AC/Delco plugs. Stock coil packs..

Almost sounds like a coil pack starting to go bad IMO.
