Here is one of the easier "cheap" mods

This mod will get rid of parasite pulley that is on the way between AC and Alternator.

Intention is to release some HP by removing rotational mass and drag, that this pulley presents, especially if bushing is worn.

    http://www.turbofirebird.com/Engine/...9/Default.aspx

    EDIT:
Idler Pulley is NOT a tensioner pulley! Tensioner pulley stays at the same place.

This is the way of doing it. DO NOT remove pulley and route it stock way like it was suggested here:
    http://forum.camarov6.com/showthread.php?t=86166
Belt rerouting required to prevent AC pulley slippage. See DIAGRAMS below.

What year F-body? Looks like a '95 - '97 with the angled throttle body - does this work on the later cars.

My only question, doesn't that 'parasite' pulley help maintain belt-tension coming off of the AC compressor pulley... wouldn't the belt be more inclined to slip in that area?
I've got dreams bigger than my wallet can handle. :work:

its 98, will work on any year and no,
tension should be even better than stock as it hugs pulleys better that way

the engineers made it like this.

i doubt that the lack of one pulley will produce enough horsepower to warrant it being removed. the friction is very minimal.

If your bored do what I do, build a fire pit and chop wood. Stop taking stuff off your car unless its gonna do something. An idler pulley is on a bearing which offers little to no energy to get moving. Mine is removed, but thats because the a/c is gone.

interesting idea and I would like to see on a dyno if it helped. Is the belt really tight or could you maybe go even smaller?

Guys stop being negative towards innovation and research, quite living in the stoneage and go out and try new things, you might be surprised what you can do with some R&D.

first time i ever heard someone say something smart like this.

CORRECT, the engineers put stuff in places because it is needed, not just to waste money

its the same reason why i buy all ac delco stuff for my car, it was made for it, why use something else... its like putting your socks over your hands to keep them warm, they make gloves for that

you use something else in order to go faster and not stay the same. ;)

im talking about things like pullys, MAF screens, etc.

they were put there for a reason

My question exactly Tom. And the answer is NO. It is not a good idea.

How much HP are you actually going to free up by removing one idler pulley???

not enough to make it noticeable.. maybe 2hp at the most, and thats at the engine.

Did someone delete my post? WTF?

I just don't understand how you want to delete the idler pulley, but you still have your AC on there. I would think that the AC is more "parisitic" than a free wheeling pulley.

I think this mod will take .001 of your 1/4.

                          Dumb.

dont get me wrong. my car is far from what the engineers at GM made my car like in the first place.

if you needed the space then go right ahead, its what modding is all about. but if you are in search of cheap mods. id leave it. Gm chose the rocker size, Header design and cam profile to maximize the efficiency of our cars. if your car is very mild (wich i would bet 80-90% of the cars on this site are), then its pointless. just my 2cents.
